Firenca Florence

Flights between Belgrade and Florence were established again on 18 th April, when Air Serbia flew to the city where the Renaissance was born

Lepota i monumentalnost nisu jedini razlozi zašto je Firentinska katedrala (Santa Marija del fjore ili jednostavno Duomo) vrhunska ikona grada. Samonoseć a kupola poput njene nije izgrađena od antike jer je tehni- ka izgubljena. Ovaj inženjerski prodor bio je glavni simbol tranzicije iz srednjeg veka u renesansu i modernu eru. Fi- nally, at a turn in the road, I looked down onto the plain and far off I saw a sort of dark mass, Santa Maria del Fiore and its famous dome, Brunelleschi’s masterpie- ce. I said to myself: There had lived Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci! There is the noble city, queen of the Middle Ages! It was within those walls that civilisation was conceived anew.” (From the writings of Stendhal describing the symptoms of “Florence syndrome”) Beauty and monumentality aren’t the only reasons why Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore, or simply Duomo) is the city’s ultimate icon. A self-suppor- ting dome like this hadn’t been built sin- ce Antiquity, because the technique had been lost. This engineering breakthrough was a major symbol of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance (and the modern era). Upon its completion in 1436, it became the world’s largest chur- ch. And to this day it is still the third-lar- gest in Europe. And the Duomo is just the beginning. Fly asap...
