Od svog debija 1946. godine Festival je postao jedan od najprestižnijih događaja u filmskoj industriji koji svakog maja prostire crveni tepih za glumačke ikone, legendarne reditelje i neizbežne kritičare
Since it was first held in 1946, this festival has gone on to become one of the film industry’s most prestigious events, which rolls out the red carpet every May for iconic actors, legendary directors and unavoidable critics
MOVIE MAGIC OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA France’s romance with Hollywood continues Following multiple Oscars won by films such as Anora, Emilia Pérez or The Substance, America will certainly be watching this year’s selection on the Croisette with increased interest F or the second time in six years – and only the fourth time in its 78-year history – the film that won the Cannes Palme d’Or went on to win the Oscar for best picture. When the same thing happened to Parasite, it had been easy to conclude that it was a coin- cidence. But this year’s victory of Anora hints at a possible pattern... Or perhaps the inevitable result of the Academy’s concerted effort to diversify and globalise its selection. Whatever the case, we are awaited by this celebrated film festival that is held every May on France’s stunning Cote d’Az- ur and which this year takes place from the 13 th to the 24 th . Like all film festivals, Cannes is limited by what’s available, al- though festival director Thierry Frémaux gets the first chance to choose any film seeking to premiere in a festival context – a number that is this year hovering at around 3,000. Of course, not every film wants this kind of exposure. For a while, Hollywood studios were reluctant to al- low debuts at Cannes, where critics can be very harsh on commercial films (as they were with Kevin Costner’s poorly-re- ceived Horizon: An American Saga). But Tom Cruise isn’t afraid of the festival and is duly returning to the Croisette (where he screened Top Gun: Maverick in 2022) with the continuation of the Mission Im-
possible franchise - The Final Reckoning – to premiere in Cannes. Such a blockbuster clearly isn’t an Oscar contender, but the future looks bright for the 19 films selected for this year’s com- petition, with organisers promising a bet- ter balance of films from Europe, Holly- wood and the rest of the world. For the first time in the festival’s history, it will open with a film directed by a French woman – Amélie Bonin’s Bye, Bye – that will be screened out of competition. Top- ping the list of the most anticipated pro- ductions is Ari Aster’s Eddington (black comedy / western), starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal. Meanwhile, Julia Ducournau, whose film Titane won the 2021 Palme d’Or, presents her new film Alpha, while there are also Kelly Re- ichardt (First Cow) with The Master- mind, Richard Linklater with Nouvelle Vague, Wes Anderson with The Phoeni- cian scheme (marking Anderson’s fifth film to premiere at Cannes), while one of the most anticipated creations in- cluded in the competition programme is Joachim Trier’s film Sentimental Value featuring Renate Reinsve, whom he dis- covered when making his masterpiece The Worst Person in the World. Jafar Panahi returns with the film It Was Just an Accident, while brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne present their new dra- ma Young Mothers. This year’s president of the jury is Juliette Binoche, while the opening ceremony will also see an hon- orary Palme d’Or awarded to a legend of world acting... Nestled along the glittering French Rivi- era, Cannes is a city that exudes luxu- ry, glamour and charm, though it began its bohemian life - believe it or not - as a tranquil fishing village. The situation shifted dramatically in the 1830s, when British aristocrat Lord Henry Brougham found himself on the Cote d’Azur and fell in love with Cannes. It was there that he built his winter residence, resulting in the village quickly becoming a magnet for members of the European nobility, with a significant contribution to its appeal also provided by Film Festival. Wheth- er you’re a cinephile or a fan of the irre- sistible charm of the bourgeoisie, you can reach Cannes after landing in Nice, which Air Serbia flies to directly from Belgrade.
