and business world dominance, power dressing has now returned with an in- trospective, subversive twist. That’s be- cause such a stylish attitude was much more than fashion back in the ‘80s – it was a veritable shield. The women who then entered male-dominated indus- tries used fashion to claim their space, relying on recognisable silhouettes: oversized blazers, accentuated waists and strict tailoring that portrayed a clear message of power. Those silhou- ettes, which had once been reserved for boardrooms, are today becoming a powerful expression of attitude, identi- ty and freedom. The shoulders remain
broad and the tailoring impeccably pre- cise, but the message has changed: pow- er is no longer imposed - it is seized. Terms like ‘ultra-femininity’ or ‘femi- ninomenon’ have for years been a driv- ing force in discourse on women’s em- powerment, but as American Vogue’s Nicole Phelps notes, “you don't have to renounce your strength to be feminine”. Whether classic Savile Row bespoke or deconstructed blazers, the suit has as- sumed a halo that celebrates the modern woman. But Ghesquière may have put it best when saying that: “French fashion is a formidable soft power, radiating a tra- dition of savoir-faire, an art de vivre and
a cultural singularity. Taken literally, soft power is also a fascinating oxymoron. How to reconcile two antagonists, soft- ness and power?” read the show notes that awaited attendees on their chairs. Whether the choice is an oversized blazer worn over a bralette or a mon- ochrome outfit that comes across as being bolder than a business suit – the rules are now fluid. Power no longer resides only in the tailoring, but in the attitude of the woman who dons it. The silhouettes may change, but the essence remains the same. One thing is for sure: style is power, and power is personal.
