Continuing Excellence: Strategy for Growth 2023-2026

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

OBJECTIVE 1: RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

OBJECTIVE 2: POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH

CONTINUE TO INVEST IN ESTABLISHED AREAS OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AND STRENGTHEN INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS TO ENHANCE OUR GLOBAL RESEARCH FOOTPRINT AND PROMOTE OUR EXPERTISE. The aim of this objective is to win prestigious research funding to further grow our research impact. We will also prioritise recruitment of academic staff to succession plan our leading research areas and build critical mass.

ENSURE THAT POSTGRADUATE RESEARCHERS (PGRS) FLOURISH WITHIN THE FACULTY, BUILDING COHORTS OF STUDENTS STUDYING BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE, DATA SCIENCE, PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL CARE.

As recognised by a very strong performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), the Faculty has an excellent research reputation led by world- class researchers that results in health improvements for patients, for industry and the wider public. Research is carried out in the Faculty’s three academic schools (Medicine, Psychology and Health and Social Care) with well established cross-cutting themes facilitated through each school’s research lead, whose role is to ensure a vibrant interdisciplinary research culture in the Faculty. Research in the Faculty stretches from blue skies research into basic biological mechanisms to biomedical science, psychology through to nanotechnology, imaging and translational studies involving patients, NHS service development and industrial collaboration. Our success has been underpinned by the Faculty’s unrivalled research

facilities. Housed across modern state-of-the-art buildings, our research laboratories and facilities are equipped with the latest instrumentation. Our research is also underpinned by HCRW infrastructure funding and participation in national and international research programmes. The Faculty’s notable recent research highlights include the Health Data Research UK centre for data science, the ESRC funded Administrative Data Records Centre, Multiple Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe nanotoxicology research programmes, the BBSRC funded lipidomics research programme and the HCRW supported Centre of Innovative Ageing (CIA) and Swansea Centre for Health Economics (SCHE). The Faculty is an ambitious academic institution, with clearly defined objectives and commitments in the six key areas: Research Excellence; Postgraduate Research; Innovation and Impact; Research Environment and Culture, Global Reputation and Research Ethics and Governance.

The aim of this objective is to inspire our researchers to achieve excellent research outcomes and develop outstanding careers in academia, industry and beyond.

In delivering this objective we will:

In delivering this objective we will:

1. Build on the excellent REF performance in 2021 to showcase the research strengths of the Faculty by developing a REF2028 strategic target based on increased 4* rated research. 2. Recruit early-career academics on enhanced research academic strands to combat an academic demographic that currently is Professor-heavy. 3. Target increased grant capture to secure the funds necessary to drive forward our flagship programmes of research, being mindful of research overheads and diversity of income streams. We will measure our success in this objective through, accumulated 4* outputs/impact, grant income metrics over the course of the next 5 years, the diversity of the income secured and particularly the success of ECR grant capture.

1. Recruit the best students nationally and internationally and work with them as individuals to tailor training needs. 2. Ensure timely completion and annual progression monitoring of PGR students by working closely with students and supervisors to maximise outcomes. 3. Provide students with well trained and motivated supervisors to realise their ambitions and maximise student experience.

We will measure success in this objective through metrics associated with PGR student numbers, completion rates and the establishment of DTP opportunities.
