Continuing Excellence: Strategy for Growth 2023-2026

FOREWORD

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science was formed in August 2021, combining Swansea University Medical School and the College of Human and Health Sciences. Our new faculty builds on over 25 years of making a difference to people’s lives through cutting-edge research, first class teaching and collaborations with the NHS, social services, industry and other partners. The Faculty’s sustained strong performance in international and UK leagues tables continues to highlight strengths across the Faculty, relating to research quality and intensity, teaching excellence, graduate employability, graduate prospects and student satisfaction year on year. Recent results from the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) revealed that 85% of FMHLS research is graded “world leading” or “internationally excellent” (4* and 3*). This is in addition to the Medical School maintaining its top 5 position in Unit of Assessment 3, with 90% of impact, 97% of outputs and 100% of our research environment rated as 4*or 3*. At the heart of our research environment is the Faculty’s research and innovation arm, the Institute of Life Science (ILS). Through the ILS, we advance health research through multi- and interdisciplinary research and link those benefits to the economy through a philosophy of Open Innovation. We also ensure that our courses contain Intellectual Property generation, knowledge transfer, innovation and diffusion and how to embed them in practice. Our unique mix of strength and depth makes us

ideally placed to prepare and support students to undertake future research careers across the fields of life science, health, social care, psychology and enterprise and to turn research into patient focused improvements. Graduate employability for our scientists and healthcare professionals is amongst the best in the UK. We also deliver the future NHS and social care workforce, through our range of commissioned and other degree programmes. This new strategy sets the direction for our future success in terms of both Research and Innovation, and Learning and Teaching. It celebrates our history of strong performance and our continued appetite for growth and improvement. Professor Keith Lloyd Pro Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science
