Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 472 were at VankleekHill Collegiate Institute (VCI) last Wednesday to present the 57 SD&G Highlander Cadet Corps with a cheque for $1,830 for their commitment and hard work. Shown above are Legion Secretary and Membership Chair June Elliott, Legion President Garry O’Neill, Corps support committee member Danika Vrancken, Corps members Captain Alex Castonguay and Chief Warrant Officer Ryon Gazey. Elliott, was happy to take part in the presentation ceremony at VCI, where the cadets meet every Wednesday evening. “I’m all for it,” said Elliott. “You’ve got to support the young people and encourage them. This teaches them responsibility and comradeship.” Every year the cadets work with the Hawkesbury-based Legion through various activities, such as the poppy drive. The sharing continued Friday evening when cadets showed up at Branch 472 to volunteer their efforts toward serving a smoked meat supper to all in attendance. On Sunday, more than 20 cadets returned to the branch once again before heading out in the rain for a full morning of door-to-door poppy sales. “What we’re doing is very important,” said 13-year-old Cpl. Owen Farrell who joined the cadets in 2014. “We’re showing our support for those who fought for our freedom.”
