to the SDAs] all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all then- transgressions in all their sins, put ting them upon the head of the goat [Satan, according to the SDAs] and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness. “ And the goat [Satan, according to the SDAs] shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited; and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.” Yet in the face of all this, the SDAs claim that they abhor the doctrine of Satan’s being the sin- bearer, while at the same time they will go to great lengths to prove that the scapegoat on whom were laid the sins of the people, was none other than Satan himself. What con tradiction, blasphemy and unholy twisting of the Scriptures! If the SDAs were sound in everything except this, and still held this one gross error, we would still have to consider them as an unscriptural cult. Compare with these interpreta tions that the scapegoat who bore Israel’s sins was Satan, the words of Peter: “Who [Christ] his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree” (1 Pet. 2:24). 7) W e might continue pointing out scores of other inconsistencies, double talk and contradictions con cerning Seventh-day Adventism’s other distinctive doctrines, but we’ll mention but one more. This deals with “ eternal punishment” of the wicked. The SDAs reject the idea of eternal punishment, but point with pride to the fact that they have now modified their position some what, and now believe that there will be future suffering of a longer or shorter duration for the wicked before final annihilation. The dur ation and severity will depend upon the record of their sins. This is rather indirectly dealt with in the book, being rather “ inferred” than taught outright. I quote: “ The work of judgment may well involve a . . . decision regarding the amount of punishment due each sinner” (page 497). This is rather vague, but thus we have been made to understand that the new (? ) Adventism now is willing to admit there will be a period of torment and suffering in hell for the wicked before final total destruction. But the SDAs actually believe no
