Cooperation in Nature

I f flatworms are irradiated with ultraviolet light they die. However, if a number are kept together after this treatment they do not die as soon as when they are separated and each kept isolated from others of their kind. Why they should live longer when kept together than when isolated is not known. An ant working on a nest will move more earth when working with other ants than when working alone. If the tail of a tadpole is cut off it will regenerate more rapidly if the tadpole is among other tadpoles than if it is kept alone. Some believe the other tadpoles raise the salt concen tration of the water and thus afford a beneficial influence. This could be tested by performing the experiment in running water where salts could not accumulate. Sea gulls in a large flock produce on the average more offspring than ■sea gulls in a small flock. White mice raised several to a cage develop faster than white mice raised in isolation. It has been suggested that those living together keep each other warm and thus conserve energy for growth. It would be a relatively simple matter to investigate this by raising some at a temperature where there would be no need for them to keep each other warm. Many other examples could be giv en to illustrate a benefit which ani mals receive from their fellows just by harmonious association. Whether or not we can find out the reason or reasons for this, the fact remains. African elephants have been seen to aid a wounded member, though it involved much effort, instead of aban doning him and seeking safety for themselves. One naturalist observed a jay bird in winter feeding an old bird which had lost the lower half of its beak. No doubt all the instances of such altruism which have come to people’s attention are but a small fraction indeed of the occurrences of these noble deeds in nature.

A number of kinds of animals will cooperate in catching food or in de fense. Coyotes take turns chasing the same rabbi t to spare their own strength while tiring the rabbit. Some pelicans group together as they come down on the water and beating their wings they come toward shore in an ever narrowing semicircle, concen trating the enclosed fish for a com mon feast. When a sparrow took over a swallow’s nest and could not be evicted, a large group of the swallows, somehow understanding their com mon purpose, took off and presently returned with mud which they skill fully used to completely seal up the nest with the sparrow trapped inside. Examples of mutual aid between different species are not lacking. From ancient times there has been a belief that dolphins sometimes come to the aid of humans in distress. At least one instance of this happened not many years ago as a dolphin was ob served pushing to shore a person who was nearly unconscious. Scientists are reluctant to attribute purpose to such actions and postulate that perhaps the dolphin was merely being playful. The truth about this awaits the time when someone with the patience, en durance and interest presents himself at an appropriate place and feigns dis tress, together with a floating object about the same size which scientists will agree would, not be mistaken by a dolphin for a human in distress. It may then be revealed, after repeat ed experiences with different dolphins, whether these animals have a pref erence between aiding a person in distress or playfully pushing any ob ject to shore. As we have so many examples to illustrate how the Lord has put into the natures of animals, some of them very lowly indeed, to be of mutual benefit one to another, we should be duly ashamed if we fail in His admo nition to us: “ Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” END.

T he world promiseth temporal and small things, and is served with great eagerness: God promises high and tem poral things, and the hearts of men are unmoved. — Thomas a Kempis
