From the President’s Desk

ALOHA E OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB MEMBERS, We are excited to celebrate the many enhancements at the Club—from our newly updated parking structure and refreshed landscaping to the zhuzhed-up Logo Shop, revamped website, expanded online store, evolving menus, new reciprocal clubs, strengthened community engagement, and growing list of athletic, food and beverage, and other experiential offerings for members young and more mature.

This year’s strategic planning process recognized the many recent improvements to our physical campus, athletics programs, membership pipeline and community outreach. We also identified ongoing opportunities around our lease, facilities, environmental factors, and technology. Two new Strategic Goals, focusing on Facilities/Campus and Risk Management, were added to our existing areas of Culture, Operations, Membership, Athletics, Finance and Governance & Planning. As the Budget Committee finalizes the 2025 budget, guided by our annually updated Strategic Plan, our committees are busy finishing the year strong and preparing for further initiatives in 2025. Looking toward the future, I am incredibly optimistic. The dedication of our members, volunteers, and staff continues to shine, propelling us forward. I wish you a wonderful holiday season, and best wishes for a healthy, happy, and productive 2025. As you may be considering some New Year’s resolutions, consider how Outrigger Canoe Club can support your aspirations.

Reflecting on this year, I’m filled with pride in our achievements. Mahalo to everyone who has contributed to our successful year! “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there,” Lewis Carroll once said in “Alice in Wonderland.” Fortunately, we know where we’re headed!

This summer and early fall, the Board, Committee Chairs, and

General Manager kicked off our annual strategic planning process, beginning with a thorough SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). Together, we refined our Strategic Goals and mapped out actionable steps for the coming year, taking into account the progress we have made to date this year, aligned with our Club’s Mission and Core Values: MISSION Let this be a place where man can commune with the sun and sand and sea, where good fellowship and aloha prevail and where the sports of old Hawai‘i shall always have a home. CORE VALUES We perpetuate our proud tradition. We nurture our fundamental connection to beach and sea as we honor and compete in the sports of old Hawai‘i. We celebrate fellowship as we enjoy, respect and serve our club and its ‘ohana.

Mahalo nui loa for being part of our ‘ohana.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Emily Su-lan Reber Porter, President, Outrigger Canoe Club

ALOHA OCC ‘OHANA, It is hard to believe that by the time you are reading this, the holidays will be in full swing here at the Outrigger Canoe Club!

us well for decades to come. The landscape around the Club has been transformed, thanks to renowned landscape architect Loriann Gordon, bringing the grounds back to their original beauty. And with a refreshed Logo Shop and Board Room, we have taken big steps to improve the overall operations and member experience. Despite these challenges, I am proud to say that the Club continued to run efficiently. Through thoughtful management and planning, we have been able to maintain high standards and deliver the experience our members expect. I am pleased to report that even with these obstacles, we are on track to end the year in a positive cashflow position. This is a testament to the resilience of our Club and the strength of our membership. In short, this year was a huge win for OCC. We have made significant improvements and investments to set us up for continued success, and I could not be more excited about what is ahead. I am incredibly thankful to be part of such an amazing Club. Mahalo for your continued support and on behalf of the entire Outrigger Operations Team, we wish you and your families a wonderful holiday season!

As I look back on the year, I am incredibly grateful for our membership and your unwavering support of the

many projects we have taken on. Together, we have navigated a year filled with both challenges and accomplishments, and your enthusiasm and understanding has made all the difference.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Board of Directors. Their forward-thinking leadership has been vital in helping us manage the year’s challenges while continuing to elevate the Club. It is an honor to work with such a dedicated group who are committed to improving the member experience while supporting the day-to-day operations. I am equally grateful for the nearly 150 dedicated employees I get to work alongside each day. Their hard work and commitment to excellence have been truly inspiring, especially during such a challenging year. They push me to do my best, and we strive to make the Club a welcoming and comfortable place for everyone. This year has certainly been marked by change, particularly with the parking garage renovation project. We experienced impacts across the board— from the reduction of member and guest parking and the need for contraflow in the garage to the loss of OC-1 storage and limited access to the volleyball courts. While the challenges were real, they also brought a lot of “new” positives to the Club. We now have a beautifully renovated parking garage that will serve

Warm regards,

Tyler Roukema, General Manager, Chief Operating Officer

DEC. 6 at 10:00 a.m. “Burma Sahib” by Paul Theroux We will have a great finish to our 2024 year with an appearance of OCC member and author Paul Theroux, who will present his newest book, “ Burma Sahib .” For those of you who attended his talk in December 2022, you know that he is open to discussing anything: his previous titles, his thoughts about writing and reading, or whatever else he wants to share. This is fine with us.

“ Burma Sahib” is a historical fiction of George Orwell’s (aka Eric Blair) assignment in Burma (now Myanmar) with the British police. Orwell’s own story is told in his title “ Burmese Days .” Copies of both books are available in the Hawai‘i State Public Library System (HSPLS). You can find our monthly schedules in the magazine, OCC eNews, the e-boards in the lobby and the tunnel, or the Reading ‘Riggers email listing (the most accurate and up-to-date) from gerthebear@hawaiiantel.net.

unique coaching style, which empha- sizes the personal development of her athletes, is drawing attention. By priori- tizing the growth of the girls as individu- als, she has created an environment that attracts paddlers and their families from other programs who are eager for a more enriching experience. This focus on per- sonal development, alongside paddling skills, has led to a notably high retention rate, with many of her girls advancing to Outrigger’s Nā Kama O Kapua Red program for ages 14-18. “Corlyn puts a lot of emphasis in the development of young women as humans in addition to being passion- ate about paddling and getting them to paddle well,” says Canoe Racing Com- mittee Co-Chair and Nā Kama O Kapua Program Lead Anthony Hunt. “You can tell when she interacts with the girls that she cares about them as more than just paddlers.” It may surprise some, but paddling wasn’t always part of Orr’s life. Today, she and her family are deeply immersed in the sport—her husband, Darren, coaches the older girls in Nā Kama O Kapua Red, and all three of their children are avid paddlers. She says she came to the sport late in life and didn’t pick up a paddle until after her first son was born. Now, with over 20 years

Corlyn Orr doesn’t seek the spotlight. For the past five years, she has been the coach of Outrigger Ca- noe Club’s entry-level junior girls paddling program, Nā Kama O Kapua White, quietly guiding young paddlers as they discover the sport's rhythm. Her calm presence and dedication have become a cornerstone of the program, ensuring that the girls not only develop a solid foundation of paddling but also grow as young women. “The canoe is a good place to teach those life lessons,” Orr says. ”Everything that happens in the canoe, you can relate it to something in life. Like, we're a community, we have to work together. We don't have to like each other, but we have to figure out how to work together.” This combination of tough love, passion, and humility earned Orr the title of Outrigger Canoe Club’s Coach of the Year for canoe racing—an honor she’s quick to credit to the team effort of those she works with. “I can't take credit for any of it. I'm just one part of the big success,” Orr says. “My team of coaches…I would just like to say thank you to them. The leader- ship of the program has been really supportive. It wouldn't be as successful if all those things didn't line up.” But to those who know her, the recognition feels long over- due. Billy Pratt, Club Athletic Captain and longtime friend of the Orr family, has seen firsthand the sacrifices she’s made to train the next generation of paddlers and continue not only the legacy of Outrigger Canoe Club, but also the history of canoe paddling. “Corlyn is 100 percent invested in the future of Outrigger’s junior paddlers,” he says. “I truly believe that for us to go for- ward, we need to know where we came from, and she has always perpetuated that in a very humble, committed way.” Orr’s impact goes beyond teaching paddling techniques—her

of experience, she continues to hone her skills through Outrigger’s open women’s program, setting an example for both her family and the young girls she coaches as they find their place in the canoe. One of Orr’s early students was Cheyna Ekau. When she first took up paddling as a freshman in high school, Orr was among the first to teach her the basics, including how to hold a paddle. Now, years later, as a member of Out-

rigger’s open women’s program herself, Ekau recently had the chance to race alongside Orr in the 2024 Na Pali Challenge. She credits Orr with shaping her into the steersman she is today. “She was there from day one, literally, and now fast forward six years later—I’m in the boat with her, and I get to call her a teammate,” Ekau reflects. “She really inspired me to stand up for myself because I’m more soft-spoken, and especially as a steers- man, that’s your job—to be vocal.” The first time Orr paddled a race with one of her students in the open women’s program, she thought she was going to cry. “To see them come up and just step right into it…so talented, so capable. That is the ideal,” she says. “You see some girls as the years go by, and they're still paddling, and they're so successful. You just feel like, ‘I had a little part of that growth there.’” Despite her full-time career as a land use planner at HHF Planners, where she has worked for over 20 years, Orr continues to be remarkably generous with her time supporting Outrigger's

next generation of paddlers. She prioritizes giving back to her community through her coaching role because she loves the connections she makes with the girls and finds joy in witnessing their passion for the sport. “I feel fortunate in that I had some really good coaches and was a part of some really strong, tight-knit crews,” Orr reflects. “Somebody spent the time to share this with me, and I want to pass it forward and share it with others. And if I can help, my life is richer for it.” Sisters Coco and Lola Heahlke have been pad- dling since 2021 and 2022, respectively, and they feel lucky to have had Orr as their first coach. Before

tie-dye sessions and team sleepovers. Despite no longer being Heahlke’s main coach, Orr continues to support her. She was there when Heahlke recently took on the Catalina Channel Crossing, even making travel survival kits for her and her teammates. Each kit included a thought- ful assortment of items, including a razor to “cut through the water,” a playful reminder of Orr’s blend of support and humor. “She’s meant a tremendous amount to our family through the love and support she’s shown our girls over the last few years,” says Matt Heahl- ke, Coco and Lola’s father. joining Nā Kama O Kapua White, Coco Heahlke had no experience in water sports. True to her approach, Orr not only taught her the fundamentals of paddling, but also helped her grow as a person. As a result, Heahlke gained confidence in the water and has since advanced to the Red program. “I love her no-nonsense attitude. It’s always focused, but then there are times when you can have fun,” Heahlke shares. Both sisters fondly recall bonding moments with the team, including taking out a two-man canoe and enjoying activities like

available to youth in extracurricular activities, Heahlke recognizes the challenge of encouraging kids to commit to sports programs. However, he has witnessed the program's growth thanks to Orr and her dedicated team of coaches. “Every year, she brings out a stronger team, and you can see that in the races. They’re just doing better and better each season.” Commitment, hard work, positivity, and a willingness to try new things and overcome fears—these are the qualities Orr instills in her

team to help them succeed. “I try to help them feel like they can do anything,” Orr says. “It may be uncomfortable at first, but we’re going to figure it out together.” “Age 10, 13–these are such critical ages in their overall develop- ment, so this program is seen as a great opportunity,” Hunt says. “We’re seeing people wanting to come into the program, and they’re not quick to leave once they’re in.” Despite feeling nervous and not knowing anyone on the team, 11-year-old Stella Pakkala joined Nā Kama O Kapua White this past season and tried paddling for the first time. “Coach Corlyn and the other coaches quickly made her feel

comfortable and, more importantly, moti- vated her to improve her technique,” says her mother, Alana Pakkala. “Over the season, Stella grew to love paddling and competition. She didn’t want to miss any practices and was motivated to improve by Coach Corlyn.” Stella’s growing love for paddling and com- petition is a testament to Orr’s unique coaching approach—one that leaves a lasting impression on her paddlers. “One thing she's always re- peated to me was having confidence in yourself and your own ability because that really affects the way you perform,” adds Ekau. Above all, Orr is passionate about instill- ing a lifelong love of paddling at Outrigger. Beyond the Club's beautiful beach, hot show- ers, and famous snack bar, her true focus is ensuring that each girl not only learns the skills of paddling, but also builds a deep con- nection to the water and their community. “Outrigger has legacy, and I feel lucky to be a part of that,” Orr reflects. “I want the girls I work with to feel bonds and connections with each other, and to the Club—so that there's always something that brings them back.” For paddlers like Ekau, that bond has been life-changing. “She introduced me to the family aspect of paddling, and that really grew my love for this sport,” Ekau shares. Thanks to Orr, these young athletes are not just learning to paddle but finding themselves and a home on the water. ■

Corlyn's calm, humble demeanor and dedication to paddling have significantly impacted the girls she coaches and the entire program.

This friendly, inclusive private members’ club is an integral part of the Henley community, with a year-round events schedule, the pinnacle being Henley Royal Regatta week. A trip to Leander during the best- known regatta in the world is known to be a highlight of both the summer sporting calendar and the social season. Its 11 boutique bedrooms were decorated by a famous rowing club or university, including Yale, Harvard and Cambridge. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy everything the club has to offer, including the best drinking and dining views down the iconic Henley Royal Regatta course from the Club’s elegant bar and find five unique dining rooms, a fitness center, business centers and private event rooms—not to mention a distin- guished collection of art and artifacts that adorn the walls and hallways. The newly renovated Four-Diamond hotel, The Inn at the League, is centrally located on Philadel- phia’s Avenue of the Arts, and offers a mix of distinctive history and old-world hospitality. The crown jewel of the Union League is 1862 by Mar- tin Hamann, a dining concept whose culinary team, led by Chefs Don Irwin and Martin Hamann, passionately create American dishes rooted in French technique, perfectly complemented by an extensive wine list. Trumbauer’s, located on the roof of the League House, is a shimmering indoor-outdoor space featuring an open kitchen and an oyster bar. If golf is your forte, three distinguishable golf courses comprise Union League Golf which offers an amazing experience through diverse programming and exceptional amenities. ➥ unionleague.org ■ the riverside patio. ➥ leander.co.uk

GET ZEN Yoga is back at OCC and suitable for all fitness levels. ➳ Mornings are made more magical when you take a yoga class with friends in beautiful settings at the Club. Classes are at 6:15 a.m. on Tuesdays in the Ocean Room and Fridays at OCC Beach. Hatha Yoga is a gentle flow focusing on the connection between breath and body. Regardless of your fitness level, your teacher, Alexandra Henry, will work with you to deepen your relationship with yourself. “Yoga can enhance the physical perfor- mance of paddlers by improving flexibility, balance, and core strength, Alexandra says. “Additionally, mind- fulness and breathing techniques learned in yoga can help paddlers stay focused and calm during challenging conditions on the water.”
