team to help them succeed. “I try to help them feel like they can do anything,” Orr says. “It may be uncomfortable at first, but we’re going to figure it out together.” “Age 10, 13–these are such critical ages in their overall develop- ment, so this program is seen as a great opportunity,” Hunt says. “We’re seeing people wanting to come into the program, and they’re not quick to leave once they’re in.” Despite feeling nervous and not knowing anyone on the team, 11-year-old Stella Pakkala joined Nā Kama O Kapua White this past season and tried paddling for the first time. “Coach Corlyn and the other coaches quickly made her feel
comfortable and, more importantly, moti- vated her to improve her technique,” says her mother, Alana Pakkala. “Over the season, Stella grew to love paddling and competition. She didn’t want to miss any practices and was motivated to improve by Coach Corlyn.” Stella’s growing love for paddling and com- petition is a testament to Orr’s unique coaching approach—one that leaves a lasting impression on her paddlers. “One thing she's always re- peated to me was having confidence in yourself and your own ability because that really affects the way you perform,” adds Ekau. Above all, Orr is passionate about instill- ing a lifelong love of paddling at Outrigger. Beyond the Club's beautiful beach, hot show- ers, and famous snack bar, her true focus is ensuring that each girl not only learns the skills of paddling, but also builds a deep con- nection to the water and their community. “Outrigger has legacy, and I feel lucky to be a part of that,” Orr reflects. “I want the girls I work with to feel bonds and connections with each other, and to the Club—so that there's always something that brings them back.” For paddlers like Ekau, that bond has been life-changing. “She introduced me to the family aspect of paddling, and that really grew my love for this sport,” Ekau shares. Thanks to Orr, these young athletes are not just learning to paddle but finding themselves and a home on the water. ■
Corlyn's calm, humble demeanor and dedication to paddling have significantly impacted the girls she coaches and the entire program.
