THE KING’S BUSINESS

Saul, if he had pursued a less generous policy toward Saul, he could not now have counted upon. the support of Saul’s fol lowers. ch, 5:1. “Then came all the tribes of Is rael to David unto Hebron, and spake, say ing, Behold, we are thy bone and thy desk.” After seven and a half years of patient waiting, at last the whole nation recognized David as the Divinely chosen king. They ought to have seen it long, before. After doing all they could to thwart God’s plan and to destroy David himself, they now recognize him as their “bone and flesh” and also as the one who had led them put and brought them in to victory (v. 2). v. 2. “Jehovah said to thee, Thou shalt be shepherd of my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over Israel." They not only recognized David as their own bone and flesh and as the one who had led them to victory, they got a still better point of view, that he was the one whom Jehovah had appointed to feed His people Israel and be captain over them. The time is coming in (1) David Asks Divine Guidance, v. 2. Asks “Shall I go ?” Answered “Go,” v. 2. Desires definite guidance and gets it, v. 2. Questions: Did David exult in the death that cleared the way to the throne? Ch. 1 : 11 , 12 . How did his attitude differ from Saul’s? 1 Samuel 15:19, 22. Does this indicate fitness for the throne? ch. 7 :20, 21, 25-29. Note: “Thy servant” seven times. (2) David Anointed King Over Judah, vs. 2-4. David goes up to Hebron, vs. 2, 3.

which many who now reject the Lord Jesus will have their eyes open to see that He is the Real One of Whom David was only the type—the One whom Jehovah Himself has chosen to be “Shepherd of His people Israel” and to be “Prince over all Israel.” At the present day, Israel is still rejecting the real David but the time is swiftly com ing when all Israel will recognize Him (Zech. 12:9, 10; 13:1; Rom. 11:25, 26). v. 3. “So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebront and King David made a covenant with them in. Hebron before lehovah: and they anointed David king over Israel." The covenant that David made with Israel and that Israel made -with David-was before Jehovah. The only cove nant that is of any real value is the one which was made in God’s presence and for His glory. Their anointing the long-re jected David as king over Israel is a fore shadowing of that day in which our Lord Jesus so long rejected will be recognized by all Israel as. their Messiah, their anointed One. Questions: Who “pitched his tent in Hebron?” Genesis 13:18. What did the “spies” find there? Num bers 13:23 (22). Why did David say “of Judah” ? 1 Sam uel 16:1 ; Luke 2 :4. Why was Judah so ready to crown him? 1 Samuel 16:1, 13. Who had previously anointed David? Psalm 18:50. Why, then, did Judah also do it? See per contra Luke 19:14. (3) Datfd Acknowledges Kindness to Saul, vs. 5-7. Jabesh-Gilead buries Saul, 1 Samuel 31 7-13. ' David honored those who honored his enemy, v. 5. David prayed for them that did a noble deed, v. 6.
