Introduction. There is so much in this lesson that it is difficult to say what shall be omitted and what shall be said. The Psalm alone would have been sufficient to have taken all our time and attention, but as the Psalm is simply introduced in con nection with David’s bringing up the ark, and as' thé lessons of the quarter are largely historical, we shall have to give most of our attention to the historical event. v. 12. "And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed- edom into the city of David with joy.’’ David’s desire to bring up the ark of God’s presence into the city, the very center of na tional life, was most commendable, but in his

former attempt to bring it up (vs. 1-10) David had gone about it in the wrong way and so the attempt had resulted in disas trous failure. His foundation mistake was that he did not inquire from God’s own book the proper way in which to bring up God’s ark. From this mistake all his diffi culties arose. God’s Word declared with perfect plainness just how the ark should be carried (Num. 4:5-12; 7:9), but by neg lecting to consult and obey the Word of God, David went about it in the wrong manner, a manner very different from the one which God had prescribed, and thus he got himself and others into very grave trou ble (vs. 6-10). The neglect of God’s Word
