himself and a very different thing for him to deny himself. No one wins success of any sort without some measure of self- denial. The pianist achieves success by rigid discipline, and has denied himself ease and play. But this is not Christian self-sacrifice. Nor is the sacrifice o f every natural inclination in order to acquire wealth any more Christian. In each case, one part o f the man has been denied for the sake o f another part. He has not de nied himself, but only a fraction o f himself. It is self-abnegation o f which Christ is speaking. It is the death o f self-will which He demands.— S trong . III. Meditation on the Lesson This familiar passage from Luke is one o f the most heart-searching passages in the Bible, for it touches a subject common to us all—the possession of property. Our Lord was asked to interfere in a family quarrel over an inheritance. The man who asked Him was one whose chief interests were in this present world. How many hearers o f the gospel are just like this man!_ How many are planning for things o f time even as they listen to eternal truths 1 Jesus would not arbitrate in this affair, but He gave the solemn warning to “ be ware o f covetousness.” How common to mankind is this sin 1 It was also this very sin which helped to cast down the angels

who fell. It was this sin which helped to drive Adam and Eve out o f paradise. It is a sin which, ever since the fall, has caused wars, quarrels, divisions, envyings, dis putes, jealousies, hatred, and anger. “ The love o f money is the root o f all evil,” says Paul, and it is the most insidious, the most utterly unsuspected temptation. The most popular confessor o f the Middle Ages has left it on record that, o f the tens o f thou sands that confessed their sins to him, not one ever confessed the love o f money. The prevalence o f covetousness, which is the term for this sin o f loving “things,” is recorded from one end o f the Bible to the other. Isaiah writes that God said: “For the iniquity o f his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him.” In Jeremiah’s time, what was the prevalent sin? “ From the least o f them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetous ness.” Coming on down into the New Testa ment, we find parable and history depict ing characters that are ruined through love o f money. The young man who came running to Jesus to inquire what he must do to ac quire eternal life was crestfallen and down-hearted when Jesus told him: “ Sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.” He was in the can cerous grip o f the love o f “things.” In the parable o f our lesson for today, Jesus is relating the story o f a man whose business was prospering, and who thought within himself, “What shall I do, because
