form. And the psalmist’s praise is based on his perfect confidence in God, who, to his faith, has already delivered him from his foes. “ Faith sees the future as present. This psalmist, surrounded by strangers seeking his life, can quietly stretch out a hand of faith, and bring near to himself the to morrow when he will look back on scat tered enemies, and present glad sacrifices! That power o f drawing a brighter future into a dark present belpngs not to those who build anticipations on wishes, but to those who found their forecasts on God’s known purposes and character.” DECEMBER 30 “ Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul” (Psa. 54:4). Faith sees the glory o f the future in the gloom of the present. “As there can be no height where there is no depth, so there can be no triumph where there is no trouble, no smile where there are no tears, no roses where there are not thorns, no hope where there is not fear, and no crown where there is no cross.” DECEMBER 31 ‘‘I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten” (Joel 2:25). Maybe you have been carrying about a withered heart, performing religious duties perfunctorily, bearing the name o f a Chris tian, without displaying a likeness to Christ, without enthusiasm and power. I am here to say all that can be changed. However far you have gone from the Sav iour, there is a way back. There is glad news for the Christian as well as for the believer. W e say to the sinner, “ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” And His word to those o f us who profess His name is, “ I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.” But there must be a recognition of need, and there must be repentance for wrong, and there must be confession of sin, and there must be renunciation o f all that has stood between us and Him. JANUARY 1 “ The crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of. the Lord shall be revealed” (Isa. 40:4, 5). The Lord will go before thee—make the rugged places plain! It is this living promise that for thee today I claim; Before thee in the morning at the breaking o f the day, Whether it dawns with brightness or with heavy mists o f gray; Before thee in the noontide heat, and when the day is past, Before thee when the shadows fall, before thee in the blast; No trial e’er can meet thee on the upward, onward way— But the Lord will go before thee to be thy strength and stay— T o meet thy need at all times, to comfort, or sustain— The Lord will go before thee—make the rugged places plain. — C h r is t ia n W it n e s s . JANUARY 2 , “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psa. 55:22). Let us gather up some of the lessons o f this song. First, there is trouble. None

o f us is without that. Sometimes it is caused by ourselves, and sometimes by others; sometimes it is in consequence of our disloyalty to God, and sometimes be cause of our loyalty. In the present case, these elements mingle . . . The trouble of the martyr is infinitely better than the trouble o f the backslider. But in either case, we should betake ourselves to prayer. David goes to God. In verses 1 and 2 is the appeal, and in 16 to 19 the assurance . . . It is better to cast our burden on God than to call for vengeance on our enemies. The Judge of all the earth will do right. Prayer is not telling God what to do, but commit ting ourselves to His will. JANUARY 3 “I ivill trust in thee”' (Psa. 55:23). It is easy to flee, but it is rarely noble. What we need is not a change o f circum stances, but a change o f spirit. Security is not always to be found in solitude. W e may meet with wickedness in the wilderness. The fleeing dove may light oh a thorn. Cowper must often have felt as David does here, though probably not for the same reason. Recall his pathetic w ords: “Oh, for a lodge in some vast wilderness, Some boundless contiguity of shade; Where rumour of oppression and deceit, O f unsuccessful or successful war, Might never reach me more. My ear is pain’d, My soul is sick with every day’s report O f wrong and outrage with which earth is fill’d.” But don’t give in to depression. Look up to God, and stand your ground. Difficul ties are instruments of discipline. JANUARY 4 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” (Gal. 2:20). A “selfish Christian” is a contradiction in terms. Christianity is the negation o f self. And let me remind you that it is not for us to reckon with self, but to recog nize that He has reckoned with it on Cal vary’s tree. W e are not called to cru cify ourselves. W e are called to recognize that we were crucified with Christ, that when the nails pierced His hands and His feet, they pierced self. And He says, “ If any man come after Me, let him say ‘no’ to self, and take up his cross daily and fol low Me.” Only so can we be meek, only so can we be like Him. JANUARY 5 “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise” (Psa. 57 :7 ). “ Vocally and instrumentally will I cele brate Thy worship. With lip and with heart will I ascribe honour to Thee. Satan shall not stop me, nor Saul, nor the Phil istines. I will make Adullam ring with music,_ and all the caverns thereof echo with joyous song. Believer, make a firm decree that your soul in all seasons shall magnify the Lord.” “ Sing, though sense and carnal reason Fain would stop the joyful sound: Sing, and count it highest treason For a saint to hold his tongue.” JANUARY 6 “I will cry unto God most high; unto
