PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT

Get to know Dr. George Semien, Anesthesiologist

Where are you originally from? I am originally from Mallet, La. and am the son of George, Jr. (late) of Mallet and Joyce Coutee Semien of Pine Clair. I am the descendant of Antoine George Simien (AKA Semien, Simiane or deSimiane), merchant and farmer, who immigrated from the Provence region of France in 1756 to America, settling, marrying and raising his family in St. Landry Parish. His signature is one of the first to appear in legal documents in the parish.

Why did you choose Opelousas General? I have always wanted to return home since I left to pursue my education in Rochester, N.Y. I had a job offer at Ochsner New Orleans in 2005 to begin once I completed my training. However, Hurricane Katrina hit, and the rest is history. In the meantime, I had the opportunity to study, learn and travel the world but always had the desire to return home and care for the community. What is your favorite thing about working at OGHS? The best thing about OGHS is the patients. It reminds me of the good solid nature of our people of Acadiana that I missed for so many years after practicing in major metropolitan areas. What do you enjoy most about being a physician? As a physician, I enjoy the most making a person

feel better through the art of compassion, caring and understanding, while treating through science and maintaining that with policy and respecting the precious resources we do have. What would you like everyone to know about you? I am the fifth George in my family line from Antoine George. I love history, genealogy and listening to stories of past times by the "old folks". What do you like to do in your free time? My time these days is spent raising my little 17- month-old munchkin, Steven Anthony. But when I have a moment, I like to exercise, catch a movie, throw in a prayer or just take in the happenings around me.

THANK AN ADVANCED PRACTICE CLINICIAN

In October, OGHS will be celebrating our Advanced Practice Clinicians (NPs, PAs, and CRNAs) with a luncheon as well as by highlighting them on social media and internal communications. One of the campaigns that we would like your participation in is a series of “Thank an Advance Practice Clinician” videos. If you would like to do a very short (less than 1 minute) video, thanking those with whom you work, please let Holly Cope-Lynn know as soon as possible, and we will work with a time that is convenient for you. You may also film your own video with your phone using the instructions below. All videos must be completed by September 15th.

To record your own video:

Please film horizontally, in portrait mode (phone turned sideways). Choose a quiet, well-lit area and be mindful of your background and surroundings. Wear scrubs or a white coat. Text your video to Holly at 318-514-9545 or upload it to OneDrive and email the link to hollycopelynn@opelousasgeneral.com.
