TLMI Honors Industry Innovators
Dochstader Named To Hall of Fame FTA has named Darrell Dochstader (1941-1997) the first inductee into the FTA Legacy Hall of Fame, a new- ly established distinction recogniz- ing industry pioneers deserving of the highest honor bestowed by the Association. The announcement was made during the welcome dinner at Fall Conference 2021. Shaping An Industry Dochstader’s contributions to flex- ography during his 30-year tenure shaped the industry, and his passion, determination and pursuit of excel- lence are still referenced to this day, according to the FTA. As co-founder of Gar-Doc Inc in Milford, New Hampshire, Dochsta- der was integral in helping the firm become a leader in narrow web con- verting. In 1996, he and his business partner, Gerry Gartner, were desig- nated inaugural recipients of FTA’s Distinguished Achievement Award, recognizing their service to the asso- ciation and industry over a protract- ed period. nizes a member of the North American package printing industry who has made an extensive contribution to the greater marketplace and who has additionally demon- strated an unwavering com- mitment to TLMI.
Thirty years ago, Craig Mo- reland made what would be- come one of the most pro- found decisions of his life. In his early thirties at the time, Moreland purchased Foun- tain Valley-based Coast La- bel Company by piecing to- gether funds and borrowing a small portion of the sale price from his father while convincing the company’s owner to carry the note for the remaining majority share. Moving Into Flexo Over the course of the past three decades,Moreland has taken Coast Label from its early days as a flatbed letterpress compa- ny to the flexo and digital house it is today.A custom, specialty solutions provider, the company serves a wide range of end-use segments and engineered applications. CEO of Coast Label, Craig More- land, was presented with the TLMI Converter of the Year Award.

DS Smith Engages Schoolchildren In Recycling Sustainable packaging company DS Smith has launched a new recycling pilot scheme in the UK to encourage school pupils to look after the planet. The DS Smith Young Recyclers program is partner- ing with five primary schools across Kent, UK, to help children aged 3 to 11 understand the importance of recycling and the circular economy through fun and engaging educational materials. Pupils can get involved in the recycling process by bringing cardboard from home into dedicated collec- tion boxes at their school, where it will be collected weekly to be turned into new packaging papers at DS Smith’s Kemsley paper mill, the largest recovered pa- per mill in the UK.Through an educational visit to the mill, the children also get to experience the science of the recycling process first-hand. The schools initially taking part in the program are Lower Halstow Primary School, Sunnybank Primary School,Teynham Parochial Church of England Primary School, Thames View Primary School, and Thistle Hill Academy. According to DS Smith, as consumer shopping habits have shifted toward e-commerce, it is vital to make sure cardboard finds its way back into recycling streams.
Aicomp Group, a provider of ERP systems for the packaging industry and Esko, an integrated software and hardware company, have teamed up to develop the best practice solutions for small and medium-sized packaging manufacturers to calculate prices and de- termine optimal production routes automatically. The two companies have been working together on joint projects since 2004;however, they now have entered a certified partnership in which they will support each other proactively and focus on future developments. Best Practice Depending on customer requirements, Esko’s best practice solutions will include products for packaging development, such as ArtiosCAD and WebCenter with the associated data management plus the approval processes and the prepress solutions ArtPro+ and Au- tomation Engine. Aicomp contributes with its entire software port- folio, such as the SAP-ERP Add-on VC PowerPack for real-time calculation, the next generation of SAP-ERP, SAP S/4HANA as well as the SAP Sales Cloud from SAP C/4HANA portfolio for customer relationship manage- ment (CRM).

FEFCO Releases Corrugated Recycling Guidelines The European Federation of Corrugated Board Man- ufacturers (FEFCO), which represents the corrugated packaging industry across Europe, has released its Cor- rugated Packaging Recyclability Guidelines aimed at optimizing recyclability via design parameters for pa- per and board packaging. Developed withThe Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI), the guidelines seek to provide the corrugated in- dustry with a practical set of tools to contribute to the optimal use of natural resources while minimizing envi- ronmental impact. The guidelines are aimed at brands, retailers, and corrugated companies — rather than the general public — to aid the design of packaging. FEFCO claims that more than 83 percent of paper and board is already recycled in the EU, while corru- gated packaging reportedly has an 89 percent recy- cled content average. However, while FEFCO says that paper and board are sustainable and renewable materials for packag- ing, the actual recyclability of packaging products is determined by composition and design, and the way in which packaging is collected, sorted, and presented for reprocessing. For example, the FEFCO guidelines identify the ad- dition of plastic to corrugated packaging as having a negative impact on reprocessing and companies’ eco- nomic margins. FEFCO says that the industry would prefer to avoid all plastics, even biodegradable variet- ies. It provides the design metric of keeping plastic content to 5 percent of pack weight as a maximum, with a 3 percent weight content being the preferred amount. The guidelines acknowledge that plastic will some- times be used and suggest types of plastic that are more problematic than others and should thus be avoided. This includes polymers with low shear strength, which can break down in the pulper and contaminate the finished product, or plastics with the same density as fibre, as these are apparently not separated by hydro cleaners used in paper mills. FEFCO adds that the industry would prefer for lam- inated paper material to be collected separately and sold as a discrete grade to mills with specialist facilities to reprocess it effectively. Some mills, FEFCO notes, can reprocess laminated products when presented in baled form, but most “standard”mills will dispose of it in waste streams. The guidelines emphasize the importance of de- signs that allow easy separation of the laminate from the board and that clearly encourage the consumer to do this before placing the packaging into recycling (Cont’d on Page 12)

streams. As such, peelable liners are named as the in- dustry preference, especially as they can help to re- duce food contamination. According to the guidelines, some film coatings added to packaging, such as single-sided laminates or metallicized films, do not interfere as much with the separation of fibre depending on the degree of adhe- sion, although the requirement to separate these can allegedly add costs. It does, however, warn that small metallic particles can interfere with the equipment used to measure flows in paper mills. Overall, FEFCO adds that — like plastics — it would prefer not to receive metallized or plastic laminated board. As for adhesives, the report suggests that the indus- try favors types that do not plasticize at temperatures above 35oC, which is the typical pulper temperature. The preference is therefore for cold set, curable, or wa- ter-soluble adhesives, rather than hot melt adhesives. When identifying their impact of varnishes on the recycling process, FEFCO says that UV varnishes can cause issues as they are not always removed by con- ventional de-inking technologies.Again, it reaches the verdict that these materials should be avoided. It does add that coatings that are soluble in water can gener- ally be treated in paper mills, so are acceptable for the industry. According to FEFCO’s report, fillers and binders — which are added to paper and board to provide en- hanced surface qualities and improve printability — do provide some challenges, but are normal constit- uents of the papermaking process, meaning they can be dealt with by paper mills. FEFCO further claims that most paper mills are set up to reprocess cellulose fibre derived from trees. It acknowledges that the industry is under pressure to develop alternatives to fibres derived from trees, but that these alternatives still require research to assess their suitability. Similarly, while FEFCO notes that the industry sup- ports research to develop alternative barrier technol- ogies, it says it cannot yet judge the recyclability of these technologies, partially due to Intellectual Prop- erty considerations. FEFCO concludes that it is not feasible or practical for the industry to evaluate the recyclability of indi- vidual packaging products on a case-by-case basis. Re- sponding to this challenge, it intends for the Corru- gated Packaging Recyclability Guidelines to provide design parameters that, if adhered to, can standardize and optimize the recyclability of paper-based packag- ing across the supply chain.
