S o m e of you I know, many of you I do not know, but I hope that through the medium of this music column in this very fine magazine we shall develop an acquaintanceship that will be both enjoyable and in spirational. At the outset let me tell you what we shall be talking about so that you can make an early decision as to whether or not you want to read on. O u r s u b j e c t is “ the ministry of music.” Probably your first reaction is that a column given exclusively to music surely can not last long. Maybe you think that the topic can be ex- haused in a couple of months? Well, we shall see. (May I hasten to say that in case of my disassociation from this publication it should not be con strued to mean that I had exhausted the subject but rather just my wel come.) We often hear the expression that “ so and so has a wonderful ministry in music.” But, to my way of think ing, music has its own ministry. True, it is helped along by personalities. But let us, for a moment, consider I music in its own right apart from any I personality assistance. Music began its ministry in my ¡ own life when as a boy I would fall asleep nightly while my father and mother sang and played the old up right piano in the living room. At first, I learned to love the melodies and later the words. I can remember so well the feeling of security that stole over me as the familiar melodies drifted to my ear. It was almost as if a watchman were calling out “ all is well.” By association, the same sense of satisfaction was experienced, when in church each Sunday, I would hear the same songs repeated. And so, long before any doctrinal or theologi cal significance could be compre hended, the beloved old hymns were providing an undergirding. Music has ministered to me all through life in many different ways. It helps me to worship. It helps me express whole some Christian emotions; such as, praise, adoration, reverence, and prayer. But even more than that, in my adult years I have been able to express creativeness through music. I have also been able to witness through music, and for this I give thanks to God. And now, how about you? Does music minister to you? Does music have a ministry in your church? At

RALPH CARMICHAEL AT WORK this point we must make it clear that music is only a tool, an implement, and to be effective it must be acti vated by a consecrated workman. So, hereafter, when we refer to the min istry of music, we shall mean those contributions made to the Lord’s work as the result of the tool and the work man. To give you some idea of just what music means to the church, let us imagine for a moment how terrible would be the plight of Christendom should all music suddenly be taken from us . . . not a single melody left to carry a meaningful lyric . . . not a single melody left upon which a prayerful soul could approach the throne of God. Our very hearts would be parched for want of a long, cool drink at the wells of melody. The Psalms that filled David’s court have been transmitted from heart to heart right down to us. The harmonies and the lyrics have changed to meet the needs of the Church through the cen turies but the source is the same — man’s desire to communicate with God and to give expression to a heart filled with gratitude for Redemption through His Son. Please do not think that we are al ways going to give ourselves to dis cussions that only musicians would appreciate, but rather we shall be dealing with various musical activ ities, personalities, and items that will be of general interest to all of you.
