Referral Pathway Almost all cancers have an NHS referral pathway in place to help guide patients and healthcare professionals to the appropriate healthcare teams and services. Historically, referrals to specialist Neuroendocrine Cancer MDTs have been processed slightly differently to the way other cancer referral pathways recommend – essentially, there has been no nationally agreed referral pathway for those with neuroendocrine cancer. However, in 2023, Neuroendocrine Cancer UK launched the National Care Pathway for neuroendocrine cancer, with the aim of seeing this pathway incorporated and implemented alongside other cancer pathways - to reduce delays and improve access to the right specialist care. Being referred through this pathway does not mean that you have to go to a specialist centre or MDT clinic: but that you - your test and scan results, and diagnosis - are reviewed by a specialist neuroendocrine cancer team to promote expert and evidence-based best care. A co-ordinated MDT approach in the management of patients with cancer enables shared decision‑making and comprehensive care through a variety of medical specialties and support initiatives.
