NCUK Virtual Patient Handbook

What do the laboratory (blood / urine) results tell the MDT? Are they within normal range or not? • general bloods that may give an indication of overall health • specific tests, for example, Chromogranins, Gut Hormone Profile, Serum or Urinary 5HiAA or Catecholamines (Metanephrines), may provide more information about the type of neuroendocrine cancer you have and how associated symptoms may be best managed. Is functional imaging (Nuclear Medicine) imaging available for review? When were they done? What do the scans show? • Octreotide or Gallium68 Dotatate Scans can be helpful - to confirm, stage and plan treatment for most neuroendocrine tumours (including most Typical and some Atypical Carcinoids and Pheochromocytomas / Paragangliomas) - depending on grade • FDG-PET scans can be helpful - for some Grade 2-3 neuroendocrine tumours (including some Atypical Carcinoids) and all Grade 3 neuroendocrine carcinomas. • MIBG scans may be used instead to help identify and stage Pheochromocytomas / Paragangliomas
