NCUK Virtual Patient Handbook

• Mood , can be used to describe how we feel over time. Moods can be influenced by the environment, diet, exercise, physical health, emotions, feelings and what we are thinking about. They can last minutes, hours, or days. For example, if we’ve overslept, burnt the toast, then found the car won’t start or we just miss the bus...and it’s raining! - this might ‘put us in a bad mood’ - altering how we may think and feel about the rest of the day and what it might bring. But our emotions, feelings and moods - even unwanted ones aren't ‘bad’. They are important tools that help us process, interpret and try to make sense of the situation we may find ourselves in and the world around us. They are part of our survival instinct (e.g., fight or flight when faced with danger), and are important to our daily life, emotional health, relationships and sense of self.
