3. PARANEOPLASTIC SIGNS, SYMPTOMS AND SYNDROMES & CANCER-RELATED EMERGENCIES: A paraneoplastic syndrome is a set of signs and symptoms that occur in people with a cancer. Cancer-related emergencies occur when a cancer - or the body’s response to it’s presence - causes a potential life- limiting occurrence - such as spinal cord compression or malignant hypercalcaemia. The development of a paraneoplastic syndrome or oncological emergency does not necessarily correlate with cancer stage or prognosis.
