THE K I N Û ' S B U S I N E S S

w ithout a knowledge of the Old Testa ment. God begins in Genesis. The seed plot is there. False notions, false beliefs, are to be destroyed only by be ginning a t Genesis. The Old Testament is a running commentary on the history of the Messiah. E lim inate th a t and the Bible is a meaningless book. The very warp and woof of th e Word of God is th e Man of Calvary. "Here is where we need to begin with our children if they are ever to have a comprehensive view or understanding of Christ. If they are to be grounded and settled so th a t they can never be moved by any false doctrines or the cunning craftiness of men or of the devil, we need to lay th e foundation deep and strong upon th e impregnable Rock. To many people the Old Testament is a dull book, full of strange scenes and mysterious teaching, a piece of musty, old-fashioned literatu re, good for the old Jews, but out of date for the tw enti eth century. They tell us th a t they are satisfied w ith the New Testament, but we find it takes bu t very little of th a t to satisfy them. (3) THE WELCOME AND WITH DRAWAL, vs. 28-31, “Abide w ith us * * * and He vanishéd from th e ir sigh t.” Coming to the village, He made as though He would go farth er, but now they wanted the strang er to abide with them. Have you noticed how when our h earts are stirred by some servant of God who brings us a real message, we want to en tertain him? That is the way your scholars will feel toward you if you break to them the Word of God and make Jesu s real to them. Gathered in th e home for th e evening meal, th e S tranger becomes the host. He takes the bread, blesses and breaks it, and gives to them . There was some thing new in the voice, the raised hand or gesture, which removed the veil from th eir eyes. As the veil was removed from Mary’s eyes when Jesus spoke the word “Mary.” The veil was ren t in

twain and Jesus, th e ir beloved Jesus, th e ir friend, the crucified and risen Lord, was revealed to them . He was H imself! F o r’ a moment they gazed in rap tu rou s wonder and then He was gone! W hat a wonderful story! Are you sure ypu get the meaning of it? The risen Son of God, coming along the road to help two humble disciples, coming to speak peace, to establish th e ir faith, to dine a t th e same table and reveal H imself to them. It seems almost too good to be true. (4) THE WILLING WITNESSES, vs. 32-35, “And they told* * * how he was known of them in breaking of bread.” They could not w ait un til morning. They must go a t once and carry the good news to the beloved band in the upper room. W hat a different road it was. How eager th eir steps. How joy ful th e ir hearts. You can make any pic tu re you w ant to and it would never be equal to the event. You can imagine the shouting and singing as they rushed along.- The Word of God was true. They knew it. He lives! They had seen Him! They had heard Him!<*i They had entertained Him! P raise the Lord! They broke into the room where the eleven were gathered and told of th e revelation th a t had been made to th e ir sorrow ing hearts. W hat a glorious time- of rejoicing they must have had together! Hera is a lesson for believers. Go to the source of supply for your faith. Go to the Word of God. “F aith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” S atu rate your soul w ith tru th and your h eart w ith fellowship w ith the risen Christ and go out and tell the story to others. QUESTIONS (1 ) Of what do men talk ? (Luke 6:45 .)
