ing, “O th a t I may know H im !” (Phil. 3 :1 0 ). Head knowledge w ithout h eart knowledge is of no value in sp iritual things. v.' 43. “There was division.” Cer tainly! It would have been too bad had th e re not been unless those high “ up pity-ups” changed th e ir minds! Christ said He came to cause division. (Luke 12:51-53.) We are not among those th a t bewail the divisions th a t exist because of Him. So long as men continue in apostasy and carnality and unbelief, God pity us if we fail to divide because of Him. vs. 44, 45. “Why did ye not bring H im ?” Probably because He was not th e sort of a Christ men could tote about, and make to sit as an idol upon the a ltar of every hum an whim or will. v. 46. “Never man so spake.” Cer tain ly not! This was God incarnate speaking. P lato, A ristotle, Dante, Mil- ton, Shakespeare, BaconS -the choicest of hum an word-builders-, will pass and be forgotten. Christ’s words remain, and will remain! He is th e living Word! vs. 47, 48. “H ath any of the ru lers believed on H im ?” Likely not! They seldom do! H ath any of th e scientists— h ath any of th e politicians and lawyers — h ath any of the doctors— h ath any of th e literati— -believed? Possibly a' few! “ I th ank Thee, F ath er, th a t Thou hast hid these things from, th e wise and. prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, F ath er, for so- it seemed good in Thy sig h t!” (Matt. 11: 25, 26.) Probably Paul can explain. (See 1 Cor. 2:9-14.) v. 49. “Knoweth not th e law.” Well, perhaps they knew grace! If you know the law and not th e grace, you are “accursed” indeed! (Gal. 3:10-13.) vs. 50-52. “Doth our law judge except it first h e a r? ” It shouldn’t; but, th e law of the worldling seems to constantly do so. Scoffing infidels are usually woe fully ignorant of th e Scriptures. Tom Paine owned no Bible, it is said. They

v. 37. “ If any man th irst.” It was th e F east of th e Tabernacles, th e most gladsome days of th e Jew ish year. Our Lord well knew th a t Jewish feasts (however happy) and sacrifices could never satisfy th e deepest cravings of the hum an h ea rt for God. None less th an the in carnate God H imself could have stood th ere th a t day and made such an offer. Jesus Christ alone can meet every human need and meet th e deepest long ings of th e soul! vs. 38, 39. “He th a t believeth on me.” The worldling seeks satisfaction in “ th ing s” ,^—in surroundings, in cir cumstances. God's tru e child has w ithin him th e satisfying fountain; and, it always overflows to others. W hat a fountain of blessing in any community on earth th e tru ly Spirit-filled Christian has ever proven to be! vs. 40, 41. “This is— th is is!” Sam,e old question— “Who is th is ? ” (Luke 7:49; Matt. 16:13, 14). "T h e endless b attle of tim e ever gathers about the person of the Christ. Blessed is th e man who has knowledge th a t He is none other th an “ th e Christ, th e Son of the living God.” (Matt. 16:16.) v. 42. “H ath not th e Scripture said ?” W hat a strik ing illu stration of th e fact th a t a man may even know th e Scrip tu res about Christ, and yet be u tterly ignorant of Christ Himself. P aul knew a lo t about Christ before he was con verted. And, yet, even years and years after his conversion, he was still cry
