HOW

MADE THE NO. 1 CHRISTMAS SONG ARIAH CAREY

“Jingle Bell Rock,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” — even with the rise of electronic pop music, these vintage songs (and many others) have made it clear that they aren’t going anywhere. But none of them are the top-selling Christmas song of all time. That distinction belongs to Mariah Carey’s 1994 hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has sold more than twice that of any other carol. In a world where vintage Christmas songs reign supreme, how did this modern single break through to become a classic? Carey and her songwriting collaborator, Walter Afanasieff, took a major risk when they decided to release a Christmas album at the peak of Carey’s career. Back then, Christmas albums were considered an indicator of waning popularity. Carey persisted, saying she wanted to take the risk, but the record label downplayed its release so it wouldn’t shine a bad light on the industry. To get in the spirit, Carey decked out her home in Christmas decor — a great act of dedication, given it was summer. When Carey revealed the melody of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” to Afanasieff, he said he was “puzzled,” but she persisted. He tried playing some rock ’n’ roll piano over her melody and eventually hammered out what Carey had in her mind, along with her lyrics.

They recorded the song using digital instruments and Carey’s vocals. They also recorded several classics for the album. “For the most part, people really want to hear the standards at Christmastime, no matter how good a new song is,” Carey says. As it turned out, the song was a smash, reaching No. 1 in several countries. A critic from The New Yorker called it “one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon.” The secret to its success? Despite modern recording techniques, its catchy melody and timeless lyrics keep it around. As one Vogue writer put it, “Those lyrics could have been sung by Frank Sinatra.”
