Madge’s Last Horse Show of the Season!
MADGE JUST FINISHED RIDING in her last horse show of the season in Waycross. Let me tell you, she had a great time competing in the show and having fun with her friends. And to top it off, boy did she make her mom and dad proud! She won a first-place blue ribbon and two second-place red ribbons, and was named English walk/trot champion in her age group.
a little nervous. Her trainer, Ms. Sandra Sears (C&S Stables), told us that Max and Madge were going to do fine and we shouldn’t worry. If there is one thing I have learned after our first year of Madge’s riding career, it is to listen to Ms. Sandra! She was right, and both Madge and Max (Team M&M) did great and had fun.
This year Madge had three shows. Next year she will have nine. We are really blessed because Madge has already developed a loyal following at the shows. Her entourage consists of Mom and Dad, sister, Aunt Katherine, Nanna, Aunt Sue, Aunt Shelia, Uncle Mike, and Aunt Beth. We appreciate everyone coming out in both the cold and the heat — not to mention the gnats — to cheer Madge on!
Madge’s horse is a chestnut-colored American quarter horse named Max. Max is Madge’s first horse. At a tad over 16 hands tall and 1,400 pounds, he is a little bit bigger than Mom and Dad thought she needed. But we have been impressed at
how Madge has shown the determination and the tenacity to work with Max and not only stay on him, but also to make him do exactly what she wants him to do. Before the Waycross show, she had practiced on Max for several weeks, but we didn’t know how he would perform at a show. This is the first horse show that she has ridden Max in, and we were

AVOID THE SUMMER SLIDE Summer Reading Programs for Kids
Having the kids home from school can be awesome, but how do you keep them busy and mentally engaged? You might find yourself eyeing expensive summer camps or wondering about private tutors. But that’s not necessary. Instead, check out some of these great summer reading rewards programs. All these programs are free, they’ll get your kids reading, and they’ll give you some time to yourself to boot! The local library is the best place to start. Most city libraries have great summer reading programs that will reward kids for their hard work with prizes, awards, and even free books. Libraries are also great places to get suggestions for kids, and they offer fun activities during the day and night that will foster a love of learning and reading. Kids are bound to get plenty of ideas for the next book on their reading list!

Cheese’s — as a dad, I’ve never been a huge fan — will give any child 10 free tokens if they read every day and record their progress on their reading calendar. Plus, there are other companies that offer incentives. Remember, reading is about more than just learning. It’s also about keeping minds active to fight the summer slide that educators dread every new school year. If you want your kids to have fun, stay sharp, and win cool prizes, get them involved in summer reading!

How to Journal if You Don’t Like Journaling
Have a Laugh on Us! I would have never thought about doing this when I was younger, but now that I have a few years under my belt — some would say more than a few — I have found keeping a journal is an interesting and stress- relieving activity for me. Journaling is both a chance to organize your thoughts and an opportunity for therapeutic release, but traditional journaling isn’t for everyone. If you hit a wall every time you try to put pen to paper or worry you’ll have to burn your journal when you’re done, there are other ways you too can enjoy the benefits of journaling. Write Letters to Your Kids Framing journal entries as letters to children can help provide a starting point for you. Many parents journal like this with the intent of letting their kids one day read the letters, but that doesn’t have to be your end goal. I have a couple of journals that have printed on the front cover “Notes From Dad.” Madge loves to read what I write in “her” book. But you don’t have to write to your kids. You can address your letters to your spouse, a close friend, your mother, a loved one who’s passed away, or, like my Uncle Shasta did, the family dog! Record Quotes Quotes are special because they capture a profound feeling in just a few words. By recording some of your favorite
quotes, you’re able to capture those feelings and reflect on why they resonate with you. Include quotes from historical figures, books, song lyrics, something you heard waiting in line at Walmart, or some of the “darndest things” your kids say. My favorites are quotes from my father, Big George. For example, Big Georgism No. 3 is, “Anything worth doing takes close supervision.” Go Digital Apps like Day One for iOS or Journey for Android are perfect for quickly recording your thoughts. Journaling apps are as easy as scrolling down social media, but they can be locked for your eyes only. Integrate written segments with photos to create entries you can reflect on from your phone, tablet, or computer. Now, ya’ll know I didn’t know all this high-tech phone stuff. The girls at my office are on top of the phone technology and helped me get this up and running on my phone. There are as many reasons to journal as there are options for alternative journaling. Try it out and whatever type of journaling you decide to do, just make sure it’s something you’ll enjoy doing every day. Happy journaling! – George

You can try to pin the movie’s enormous success — grossing $470 million worldwide — on its thrilling story, and certainly that was part of it. But the prevailing opinion seems to be that “Jaws” gave Spielberg the template for the perfect summer blockbuster. Create a huge baddie and a colossal hero and let the plot play out like the classic cowboy movies of the 1950s. But, in fact, “Jaws” is as indebted to timing and marketing as to the super scary fish. Before its release, Universal already smelled blood in the water, giving three times the usual number of interviews during its shooting. They went on to give a preview at Long Beach and recorded the audience’s reaction. These tapes were used as part of an unprecedented $700,000 dollars’ worth of TV advertising. In 2017, $700,000 won’t pay for the actors’ catered food on a blockbuster movie. Nowadays, you can’t throw a beach ball in June without hitting some spandex-clad superhuman or lightsaber-wielding Jedi. But, even as the trailer for “Transformers 15” comes on, we’re not complaining. We’re too enthralled by what’s happening on screen. So, if you’re like me, when it’s time to come in from outdoors, get to the movies and watch a great flick! - George WE’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER THEATER ‘Jaws’ and the Rise of the Summer Blockbuster
For many, summer is a great time to get outside and soak up the sunshine. For thousands of others, summer is a season littered with bone-rattling explosions, computer-generated spaceships, and lightsabers. Or, if you’re my daughter Madge’s age, cute little catchphrase-spouting animated characters. All this is just to say that summer blockbusters are a big deal, raking in billions of dollars each year. Today, the blockbusters are “Star Wars,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” and they earn boatloads of cash. But it wasn’t always this way. Back in the early ’70s, ticket sales consistently dropped off during the summer months. After all, who wants to sit inside on a beautiful day when you could be basking by the water? All that changed when Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” hit the screen on June 20, 1975, and sent every beach bum scrambling out of the water and into theaters. I remember loving the beach, but after seeing “Jaws,” I didn’t want to get in any water that wasn’t as clear as a pool!
