From waste to new life
The Selenis process recovers monomers through advanced recycling. Glycolysis is used to break-up PET waste and reduce it to its polymer building blocks — called monomers. Next, they are reintroduced to the value chain as recycled polyester raw materials.

What is unique about Selenis breaking-through technology is that we combine the recycled PET with virgin raw material at specific dosages, according to production throughput and desired percentage of recycled content, resulting in the production of new polyesters with high levels of PCR.
Selenis current PCR production is initially supplied by Renascis, our recycling company. During a first stage, Renascis mechanically recycles PET waste flakes, advancing then into a glycolysis process. Glycolysis is used to break-up PET waste and reduce it to its monomer building blocks. During the final stage, after esterification and the polymerisation process our Eco resins are obtained, incorporating chemical recycled content.

Benefits of advanced recycling
Superior efficiency Removal of solid contaminants during transfer of the monomer between the esterifier and the polymer autoclave with higher efficiency than mechanical recycling due to low melt viscosity of the monomer.
Extraction of most volatile contaminants During the polycondensation process, that takes place in the polymer autoclave. In the course of the melt phase, the batch is submitted to a high vacuum level, below 1 mbara, for a significant period of time.
Improved properties Final products have better overall properties when compared to mechanical recycling and no thermal history.

Comparing virgin and recycled PET
Life cycle analyses have examined energy requirements and environmental impacts of producing both recycled PET (rPET) and new, virgin material. Results show that the production of rPET pellets has significantly better results for the environment than that of virgin materials in almost every impact category measured. The life cycle studies help to quantify the environmental benefit that comes from recycling PET.

Clear resins — produced with up to 100% mass-balanced recycled content , certified to the ISCC Plus standard, offer a transparent and sustainable solution. The ISCC Plus certification ensures that the recycled content is used throughout the supply chain, as all involved players during the process must be equally certified.
Selenis Portugal obtained the ISCC Plus certification for the first time in 2023, certifying our Clear resins with recycled content using mass balance allocation. Mass balance measures and tracks recycled inputs and outputs, allowing our clients to report the percentage of recycled content allocated to their products. By certifying to the ISCC PLUS standard, a globally recognised certification system, Selenis provides transparency to track certified recycled content throughout the value chain.

Our collaborative approach to advancing circularity in textiles
Life Politex¹
Syre 3 Selenis has partnered with Syre to establish a textile-to-textile recycling facility in Cedar Creek, North Carolina, which is expected to be operational by mid-2025. The facility will integrate advanced recycling technologies, combining depolymerization and polymerization processes for industrial-scale recycling of polyester textiles, with a strong focus on sustainability. This initiative seeks to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and serve as a model for future global expansion of textile recycling.
Selenis participates in the Life Politex project, with the aim of establishing the first industrial pilot plant for fiber-to-fiber recycling, focused on full circularity in polyester production. The project implements a comprehensive recycling process, including textile waste collection, mechanical recycling, chemical depolymerization and polymerization to create new polyester fibers, which can be reintegrated into textile production. Life Politex seeks to reduce landfill waste and incineration of polyester textiles by advancing recycling technologies that transform textile waste into new materials, contributing to a sustainable circular economy.
Circ²
Selenis has successfully produced high-quality recycled PET (rPET) chips from Circ’s recovered terephthalic acid using polycotton textile waste at a pilot plant in Italy, with plans to continue the collaboration and support Circ’s industrial production. The partnership demonstrates the effectiveness of Circ’s monomer synthesis, matching the quality of virgin monomers, and is aligned with Selenis’ goals to reduce plastic waste and carbon footprint by transforming textile waste into new products. This initiative highlights the potential of innovative recycling technologies to address industry challenges, in particular the separation and recovery of polycotton blended textile materials.

In line with our vision to decrease the industry's dependency on fossil materials, we have developed PET and PETG resins with up to 30% of bio-based content (bio-MEG) resulting in a LCA reduction.
The annual growth of bio-based polymers is 17 % , significantly higher than the overall growth of polymers (2–3%) – this is expected to continue until 2028. The most important driver in 2023 were global brands adapting their strategy to transition polymers,
plastics, and chemicals industry to become climate-friendly and part of the circular economy, thus offering customers environmentally friendly alternatives to petrochemical products.

Bio-MEG
UPM BIOCHEMICALS
In line with our vision to decrease the industry’s dependency on virgin fossil materials Selenis partnered with UPM to develop bio-based PET and PETG resins. UPM produces more sustainable, renewable MEG and MPG made from locally sourced and invariably certified wood in Germany. UPM extracts sugars from wood, through enzymatic hydrolysis and leverages said ingredient to produce Bio-MEG. The figure below perfectly depicts UPM’s Bio-MEG supply chain.

The partnership: Bio PET/PETG
Utilising UPM’s Bio-MEG as feedstock, Selenis developed bio based PET and PETG resins, in line with our vision to decrease the industry’s dependency on virgin fossil materials and to drive towards a net zero circular economy. These resins have been utilised in applications for the cosmetics and pharma sectors. The intent is to continue developing the fruitful relationship in 2024, and to develop Bio PET and Bio PETG resins for a plethora of other final applications. Sustainable Drop-In Solution! UPM renewable glycols have exactly the same high quality properties as current, fossil- based glycols. They can be integrated in existing production processes and work in all existing recycling processes - a true drop-in- solution with improved sustainability as value add.

Towards Zero CO₂ Footprint! UPM BioPura™ bioMEG has a negative cradle-to-gate carbon footprint. It is based on a third-party validated LCA according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, considering the biogenic carbon from their raw material. This enables a significant improvement in any PET/PETG CO₂ footprint, bringing it closer to net zero.
Local value chain UPM glycols are produced in Germany, for regional value chains, ensuring maximum supply security, a water-proof chain of custody and proximity to the European chemical industry.

In 2023 we achieved a decrease of 10% in energy intensity, versus our 2021 baseline year, thanks to increased production and the implementation of efficiency measures.
These measures included enhancing thermal insulation, addressing steam leaks, and renewing equipment with more efficient models.
Energy intensity is different in each production site due to their different processes and products. In Portugal we have a batch production system and vacuum is produced with steam. In Italy our production is both batch and semi-continuous and vacuum is done by electric vacuum pumps (less energy intensive compared to steam ones).

Renewis - our sister company - provides clean energy to our Portugese and Italian production facilities through on-site solar parks.. Our renewable energy plan is to roll out this strategy to all our production sites as part of our goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2050. In 2023, we achieved a significant milestone by sourcing 77% of our electricity from renewable sources. This milestone surpasses our target to source 50% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

A global solution to a global problem Selenis is a proud endorser of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty. Convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF and supported by more than 170 businesses across the plastics value chain, financial institutions and NGO partners.
Our vision is a circular economy in which plastics never become waste or pollution, and the value of products and materials is retained in the economy. To achieve our vision of a circular economy for plastic, we believe that progress must be achieved in three critical areas:
Reduction
of plastic production and use through a circular economy approach, focusing on those plastics that have high-leakage rates, are short-lived, and/or are made using fossil-based virgin resources.
Circulation of all plastic items that cannot be eliminated, keeping them in the economy at their highest value.
Prevention & Remediation
of remaining, hard-to-abate micro and macroplastic leakage into the environment, including robust waste management practices and tackling legacy pollution.

Addressing the microplastic challenge
The presence of microplastics in our environment has emerged as a critical global concern. These tiny plastic particles, measuring less than five millimeters in size, are ubiquitous in our oceans, freshwater systems and soil. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach and our industry must develop innovative solutions aimed at mitigating microplastic pollution. Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS) is a global initiative led by the plastics industry to reduce the potential for microplastic pollution in our waterways and environment. All Selenis production sites have pledged our dedication to environmental stewardship by becoming a member of the OCS program and implementing the OCS Pledge's foundational strategies to prevent and mitigate resin loss.
Plastic free Venice Sampling along 40-meter perpendicular to the shore, with subsequent flotation, sedimentation, and cascading filtration to collect retentates. In the laboratory, these retentates will be filtered, biotic organic matter will be digested, and samples observed, classified, and analyzed using FTIR for polymer identification. This project is being developed in collaboration with the Plastic free Venice non for-profit organization and the Technical and Technological Institute (ITT) Montani of Fermo, the oldest in Italy and will conclude with the preparation of detailed written and graphical documentation. Plastics Pact Mexico Participated in the Nayarit beach clean-up, which involved characterization of collected plastics and identification of the 10 most harmful and unnecessary plastics in Mexico. The results of the collected data will determine next steps in addressing ocean plastic pollution in Mexico.

Beach clean-ups
Selenis partners with local NGO’s to organise regular beach clean- ups with children to encourage stewardship and volunteerism along the coastlines, getting the younger generation involved in cleaning marine debris whilst promoting environmental awareness.

COMPROMETIDOS CON EL MEDIO AMBIENTE
Sponsorship of regular beach clean-ups along the coastline of the state of Jalisco, Mexico, organised with more than 220 students from local schools. To increase engagement, children who participate are rewarded with surf lessons to make the occasion a memorable and positive event.
Two beach clean-ups organised per month in the Isle of Mozambique. +45 children and youth from vulnerable backgrounds and 6 adults participate. The amount of trash collected in each of the beach clean ups is +70 kg of trash collected in each beach-cleanup, cleaning an area of approximately half a kilometer.

Combating deforestation and restoring biodiversity
Our sister-company Renewis Nature takes various measures to make sure that we have a positive impact on forests as we believe that their protection is essential to ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change. Our commitment to combating deforestation involves a comprehensive and multi-tiered approach, from encompassing policy development and operational practices to community engagement. Our most recent commitment was to reforest the Native Atlantic forest, one of the most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems in the world. For this project we partnered with Instituto Terra, a model of successful reforestation and sustainable land management. Through the Renewis Reforest project a total of 30,000 have been planted in 2024 with more to come in 2025. We engage with local communities and involve employees in our reforestation projects. In 2023 we formed a partnership with the Instituto Zag, in Brazil, to support their mission of preserving the Araucaria Angustifolia forests and the culture of the Xokleng tribe. In May 2023 we donated more than 12,000 seedlings and biodegradable bags used in the plantation. In 2024, we reaffirmed our commitment and increased our donation of seedlings.
