Into the future - sustainability presentation

Empowering waste collectors

As a company committed to ethical and sustainable practices, one of our major concerns lies with the wellbeing of the most vulnerable individuals within our value chain. Within the circular economy, waste pickers are essential for the waste management in many countries; however, they are in a particularly vulnerable situation. They often work in the informal sector, lacking access to social protection, such as health insurance, retirement benefits, and unemployment benefits. As a result, they face economic insecurity and instability. During their everyday work, they also face health risks due to infections, and exposure to toxic substances, which can have long-term health implications. Also, they are highly stigmatized facing discrimination and social exclusion due to the nature of their work. In 2023 we supported 2 waste pickers organisations in Curitiba, Brazil, with the goal of alleviating the difficult conditions they are in, and supporting the work carried out by this crucial sector in the recycling value chain. By addressing the needs of waste pickers, we not only fulfill our corporate responsibility but also contribute to building resilient and inclusive communities.

Through the Reciclajuda initiative, in 2023 Selenis supported the living and working conditions of 10 waste collectors, by providing tools that allowed them to increase their collection rates, and hence their monthly income.
