Year 12 Bulletin 15.03.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Last Friday Year 12 students were encouraged to make pledges as part of International Women’s Day. It was so positive to see the year group get together to recognise the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalised communities. Students made pledges to consider the ways in which they could inspire inclusion in their personal lives and their communities. I am delighted to report that Luke R in 12AMZ entered and won a Spanish Writing Competition organised by King’s College London. His short story: Nuestro Cielo (Our sky/heaven) is really sublime! It will be published in KC Student Magazine which is edited by students of Iberian Languages. He has also been invited to a workshop on 20 March. Bravo Luke! Further congratulations to Yasmin I, James T, Anvi O and Rebecca C who have successfully submitted compositions to enter a national vocal music project with the Ora Singers. They will receive up to 10 hours of free one-to-one mentoring with a professional composer, who helps them write a new piece for ORA Singers. Their ideas will be workshopped by the ORA Singers, who offer tips and advice along with a Guest Composer. At the end of the scheme, their new pieces will be performed and recorded by ORA Singers in front of a live audience and a panel of industry experts. We were delighted to welcome Professor Mark Blagrove back to host the first-ever student Science and Art of Dreaming workshop. The workshop, which has been held in notable venues including the USA, Vienna and Switzerland, landed in Twickenham to provide a unique opportunity for our Art and Psychology students to collaborate in exploring dreams. A reminder Year 12 monitoring reports will be with parents shortly. Year 12 mock exams take place on 15 April for 2 weeks. Students will receive their exam timetable shortly.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

“Letters From The Underground” by Fyodor Dostoevsky

“Letters From The Underground” by Fyodor Dostoevsky (translated from Russian) is a deep dive into the human psyche from the perspective of a man who is overly negative and is criticising himself. It is in the form of a “confession” and explores the complexity of the man’s mind. I would recommend this novella to those who want a challenging but rewarding read, that will draw you in and intrigue you.
