The Unwritten Chapter of Parenthood PLANNING AHEAD Estate Planning | Probate | Guardianships for Your Life Chapters
Plan Now to Protect Your Family’s Future
People often underestimate how challenging it can be to become a parent. Many are thrown into the parenting role without knowing what to expect. We can guess what it would be like by reflecting on our own childhood experiences and placing ourselves in our parents’ shoes. Still, we don’t really understand how much guidance, support, and security we must provide to our children for them to find happiness and success in life. It’s an eye-opening experience and takes time to get comfortable with this new level of responsibility. Parents wear many hats throughout their parenting journey. They love and nurture. They teach values. They do everything in their power to protect their families and shield them from the world’s dangers. In my discussions with parents whose children are grown, many are still worried about their futures. As daunting as it might sound, imagine what life would look like for your family when you were no longer around. Could your family continue living with the same quality of life? Would your family know and live the values you hold most dearly? Would your children get treasured family heirlooms? Would your family be able to grieve, or would they have
to deal with the painful, costly, and time-consuming probate process? Those with estate plans in place and properly funded can look at these questions and feel peace of mind, knowing they’ve protected their family’s future. When defining the passing of your assets to your heirs, you can designate distributions as outright or by holding in trust with specific terms. Outright distributions can be a problem in some cases. We’ve seen unrestrained spending, sudden “friends” wanting handouts, or a spouse clearing out the marital account. If you choose to keep the assets in trust, it can avoid these problems and provide protection. Make sure your trustee knows your wishes, clearly and specifically, yet with some flexibility so your values can be followed. The other thing to consider is that estate planning is not only for distribution of your estate; it can create guidelines for incapacitation. This is your opportunity to lay out your wishes if you or your spouse becomes incapacitated. While some people may clarify to their spouses what they would want to happen in these unique circumstances, others may never mention it. You don’t want to put

your spouse or another family member in the difficult position of deciding whether to resuscitate you or keep you on life support. Creating advance directives in your estate plan can ensure your family knows how to carry out your desires exactly as you want them and avoid guardianship. Finally, precision in your estate planning without the depth of good relationships, can hinder leaving the best legacy. Good relationships are key. This month, we celebrate fathers, and last month, we celebrated mothers. This is a wonderful time to
express gratitude to our parents, our children, and those we love. - Kim Boyer

LOYALTY RUNS DEEP GITA’S HEROIC DASH TO SAVE HER OWNER
The bonds we develop with our pets are unlike any other we experience. They depend on us for their every want and need, and we often give them whatever they ask for! We know they would do the same for us if the roles were reversed. As the years pass, that bond deepens, making us inseparable from our furry friends. Many of us have felt despair when we imagine life without our trusty dog, cat, or other pet. It turns out that some animals feel the same and will do everything in their power to protect their owner if tragedy occurs. An 84-year-old man in Washington state woke up one morning to the sound of his glucose machine
telling him his blood sugar was too low. As he headed toward the fridge, he noticed his 13-year-old dog, Gita, wanted to go outside. Shortly after being let out, Gita took off toward the woods, and her owner followed in pursuit. After traveling 20–30 feet, the man turned around to head back home when dizziness overcame him. He fell to the ground, broke his hip, and immediately started shouting for help. Gita remained by her owner’s side for some time before realizing nobody would hear him in the secluded woods. She jumped into action, heading toward a well-traveled street, where she encountered a
sheriff’s deputy. The deputy tried to get the dog in his vehicle to no avail, so he surveyed the surrounding area to find Gita’s owner.
The deputy could not locate the owner but still felt something was wrong, so he turned his attention back to Gita. The two locked eyes before Gita stood up and ran toward an unmarked side street. Gita led the deputy directly to her owner before any more harm could come to him. After the event, the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office posted “Hero Dog Saves Owner” and their account of the story on Facebook. Gita certainly proved her loyalty and bravery that day! YOUR VALUES, YOUR LEGACY Include Charitable Giving in Your Estate Plan to Make a Greater Impact
Throughout our lives, we encounter various charitable organizations committed to causes we’re passionate about. These organizations may focus on disaster relief, providing for the hungry or homeless, education, veterans, seniors, animals, and more. When you find a charity that aligns with your values, you may want to get involved and find ways to support and help it. While you can donate time and money to these causes now, you can also incorporate charitable giving into your estate plan, helping these organizations continue providing for years to come.
fund vital programs that support those in need or change the face of the world as we know it. This is one of the best ways to leave a legacy beyond your immediate family. One benefit that might not be apparent is that including charitable giving and discussing it with your loved ones can bring your family closer together. This is your chance to explain why the cause is so important to you and why you want to include it in your estate plan. Once your family understands your reasoning, they may want to find additional ways to support your charitable efforts. Charitable giving also has some tangible benefits. For example, giving to a qualified charity could result in tax deductions to help ease the financial burden of estate taxes. This can directly benefit your loved ones and help maximize the impact of your estate plan!
By including charitable giving in your estate plan, you’ll gain a host of benefits. For starters, you define your legacy. You have personal values you’ve adhered to throughout your life. Giving to charities that align with your

Little Birds, Big Discoveries Are Hummingbirds Actually Solitary Animals?
If you’ve ever set up a hummingbird feeder in your yard or even seen one zoom through your garden, you know how independent they are. Hummingbirds usually fly solo and fiercely guard their feeding spots and potential mates from each other. However, a recent discovery challenges what we thought we knew about these tiny birds — some may be more social than we assumed. A SURPRISING DISCOVERY Ornithologist Gustavo Canas-Valle recently found multiple hummingbird nests grouped together in the same area in Ecuador’s High Andes. Researchers previously attributed this unique behavior, which had never been documented in hummingbirds, to the freezing temperatures at more than 12,000 feet. However, they’ve found several more groups of hummingbirds roosting and nesting together in the surrounding region, suggesting they choose to live together. Despite the observations, other scientists feel it’s too quick to label hummingbirds as social animals. Charles Brown, a University of Tulsa behavioral ecologist, argues that cohesive social groups work together to help each other, which they did not observe in this case. Canas-Valle admits that more research will determine whether the birds simply tolerate one another due to environmental conditions or actively cooperate as a group. However, his initial observations suggest group collaboration already exists, and he expects to find other hummingbird species engaged in the same activities. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR HUMMINGBIRD RESEARCH This discovery challenges long-held beliefs about hummingbird behavior. It remains to be seen whether hummingbird nesting habits are more flexible than we initially thought or if the behavior is unique to particular species or regions. Researchers now have a new avenue to explore, and future studies will hopefully shed additional light on whether hummingbird nesting is a survival strategy or a one-off quirk. Either way, findings like these are a reminder of how surprising nature can be.

furry little sister Sophie cannot bear a second on the fake grass – she heads for cover so fast – it is too hot for her precious paws. The kids keep cool by jumping in the pool and eating lots of popsicles. It is so much fun to watch them run and jump. When the sun gets lower in the sky and there is some shade, all three of us dogs run circles around the pool, too! Summer is fun! If you have pets, pay attention to their response to the heat. Some people assume dogs can handle the heat well because they’re
animals, but our bodies don’t work that way. We’re actually at a higher risk for heatstroke because our bodies run warmer naturally. If you take your pup for a walk or just hang out in the backyard, provide plenty of water for them. If you notice sluggish behavior or increased panting, head on inside. Your dog will be much more comfortable in the air conditioning! I hope you have a great summer!
Whenever summer rolls around, we feel a buzz of excitement. The kids are out of school, vacations are on the horizon, and so many fun events help us make the most of the season. I’ll likely spend my outdoor time on the real grass whenever we head outside! My
