ethnic division that accompanied their demarcation and their severe effects on long-term economic and institutional development throughout Africa. The study also sheds light on the role and efforts of the African Union in settling border disputes between its member states. Ultimately, it finds that the Organisation of African Unity’s handling of colonial borders is currently a burden on the African Union, and a never ending cycle it is unable to break due to inaction of former colonial European powers and the lack of financial resources, technical knowledge and African political will to demarcate borders.
