Cooking Up Future Chefs: The THA School Cooking Challenge in Partnership with Tassal
We were proud to work with the Migrant Resource Centre on their Hospitality Gateway program, This program is for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds who are interested in working in the hospitality industry. 20 Migrants embarked on a 10-week course where they worked with THA’s own Peter Handy, who took them through everything from food safety to making coffee.
In a delightful fusion of education and gastronomy, the Term 1 THA School Cooking Challenge, in partnership with Tassal, is hoping to inspire the next generation of hospitality professionals across the state. The competition, open to all schools statewide, is not just about cooking – its about combining creativity and nutritious, sustainable food. The competition saw students from various backgrounds come together to showcase their culinary skills. The rules were simple yet challenging: salmon, provided at a generous discount by Tassal, had to be the main ingredient. Each student created dishes highlighting their skills and creativity, with chefs and industry professionals judging their efforts.
The aim of the program is to help migrants and people from refugee background develop and harness the skills and tools needed to walk into a job in the hospitality industry. Not only did the participants learn practical skills like knife handling, food hygiene and plate bridging, they also took part in the Great Customer Experience Program and learned about the importance of the customer experience, the brand of a business, the Tasmanian Brand and the importance of the business being profitable. If someone who has been a part of this program applies for a role in your business, give them an opportunity and I’m sure you’ll be happy you did!
The winning students received vouchers to some of our THA member venues, providing them with the opportunity to dine at some of Tasmania’s finest restaurants and learn from industry professionals. These prizes are designed to further inspire and encourage young chefs, fostering their passion for the hospitality industry.
We are already underway for the Term 2 competition, the THA Term 2 Bake Off!
