Our members are committed to professionalism, craftsmanship, and ethical business practices. Beyond supporting the industry today, we are also invested in its future by championing skilled trades through scholarships, co-op placements, and apprenticeship opportunities. St. Thomas and Elgin Home Builders Association (STEHBA) would like to give you a warm welcome to the 2026 STEHBA home show. We wish to thank you for spending your time with us at our home show, as this is a great opportunity to connect with our local builders, renovators, and vendors. We are proud to provide a space to showcase them. STEHBA is the combined voice of the residential construction industry in the St Thomas and Elgin area. We advocate for the needs of our members and the home-buying public. We work to create change through advocacy at the national level through the Canadian Home Builders Association, the provincial level through the Ontario Home Builders Association and locally through our municipal councils. Through each of these associations, we work together to promote the building and renovation industry and promote positive housing growth in St. Thomas and Elgin County. Our local association meets monthly to remain connected and in tune with industry trends. We are also connected with our local high schools in helping connect high school-aged students to co-op placements, job site tours and job/apprenticeship opportunities. We also offer scholarships to several high school-aged students looking to further their careers in the construction industry. We are excited to continue advocating for our local community while working together with other associations at both the provincial and national level. Sincerely Jesse Nieman, President, St. Thomas and Elgin Home Builders Association We hope you enjoy the show and leave inspired to take the next step in your home journey. Small-Town Living Meets Modern Design at Shedden Meadows A new residential development is set to bring modern homes and new opportunities to the community of Shedden. Known as Shedden Meadows, the project by DHP Homes aims to combine the charm of rural Elgin County with the convenience of nearby cities and major transportation routes. For Dave Sparenberg, the developer, the location was a natural choice. “Shedden offers a unique balance that’s increasingly hard to find: a true small-town setting combined with convenient access to major employment centres and highways,” says Dave. “Located just southwest of St. Thomas and only minutes from Highway 401, it allows residents to enjoy quiet country living while remaining connected to London, St. Thomas, Port Stanley and surrounding communities.” The area is part of a region that has seen steady growth in recent years, making it an appealing place to introduce a thoughtfully planned housing development. According to Dave, the vision behind Shedden Meadows is to create a welcoming neighbourhood that reflects the character of the surrounding community while offering modern housing options for today’s homeowners. “Shedden offers that balance people are looking for,” he explains. “It’s a place where you can enjoy the quieter pace of small-town living while still having easy access to work, shopping, and services in nearby cities.” The development is designed to appeal to young families, commuters, and retirees. Everyone can expect to find something that suits their needs in the new neighbourhood. “Shedden Meadows is designed to appeal to a broad range of homeowners,” says Dave. “Young families are looking for space, affordability, and a safe community environment, while commuters want a quieter home base that’s still close to Highway 401 and nearby cities. At the same time, downsizers St. Thomas Homeshow Guide
and retirees are looking for peaceful surroundings without being too far from essential services.” To support this variety of homeowners, the community will feature a mix of housing types, including single-family homes, semi-detached homes, and townhomes. This range of options helps make the development accessible to buyers with different lifestyles and budgets. Homes in Shedden Meadows will follow a modern yet timeless architectural style. The designs combine contemporary layouts with elements that reflect the character of smaller communities. “Buyers can expect spacious family-oriented floor plans and thoughtfully designed streetscapes,” Dave explains. “There will also be options for walkout basements on select lots, and homebuyers will have opportunities to personalize floor plans and finishes so they can create a home that suits their style and lifestyle.” Outdoor spaces and community connections are also important parts of the development’s design. Within the neighbourhood, a pathway will lead to Union Road and eventually to a cross- walk that connects residents to existing soccer fields and a playground. The nearby Shedden Keystone Complex, which includes a community centre which hosts various activities throughout the year, library and baseball diamond, will also offer opportunities for recreation and community events. The development is expected to bring new energy to the community. “Developments like Shedden Meadows help support sustain-able growth by bringing new residents to the community,” Dave says. “This can strengthen the local economy, support local businesses, and encourage further investment in the area.” “What’s most exciting is the opportunity for residents to truly feel part of a community,” he says. “Whether it’s families watch- ing their kids play outside, neighbours gathering together, or residents enjoying the quiet countryside at the end of the day, Shedden Meadows is designed to create those moments.”

A New Standard for Custom Exterior Finishes
When it comes to making a home or building stand out, colour and finishing details can make all the difference. That philosophy is at the heart of SW Color Plus Inc., a local company specializing in custom exterior finishes that allow homeowners, builders and architects to bring their visions to life. Owners Martin Dyck and Anna Dyck say the idea for the company didn’t happen overnight. Instead, it developed over many years of experience in exterior installations. “SWCP has really been years in the making,” says Martin. “From seeing the market need, to brainstorming, dreaming, and finally breaking ground in late 2024, it’s been a journey shaped by what we’ve learned in the industry.” The business is closely connected to Dyck Exterior Installation Inc., a well-established company that Martin originally started on his own. In those early days, he worked directly on job sites, installing exterior materials and developing hands-on knowledge that would later shape both businesses. Martin explains that those years gave him a deep understanding of installation techniques, emerging trends and the wide range of materials used in exterior design. Just as important, they gave him insight into what customers were looking for. “Year after year, we had builders, homeowners and architects asking about custom finishes and unique exterior colours,” he says. “They wanted ways to make their homes and projects stand out.” Those repeated requests highlighted a gap in the industry, especially in sourcing custom exterior finishes locally. Supply chain challenges and reliance on out-of-province suppliers often meant long lead times and limited colour options. SW Color Plus was created to solve that problem. “Our goal was to offer exactly what clients were asking for, durable finishes, short lead times and local expertise,” Martin says. “We wanted to give people the ability to truly customize their exterior projects.” The company specializes in what it calls “custom colour exteriors,” a concept that opens up almost limitless possibilities for design. “Custom colour exteriors mean homeowners can dream up virtually any exterior colour and we can make it happen,” says Anna. “From classic tones to completely unique designer shades, we can match it.” Beyond colour itself, the company also offers a wide range of coated exterior products, materials and profiles designed to help bring a project’s vision to life. Since its soft launch in late summer 2025, SW Color Plus has already contributed to projects throughout Southwestern Ontario, supplying materials for both residential and commercial developments. “We work on everything from full residential new builds and renovations, to large-scale commercial projects,” Anna explains. “Whether a project is large or small, we’re able to supply the materials and work closely with our sister company, Dyck Exterior Installation, when installation services are needed.” A key part of the company’s offering is its advanced colour- matching technology, which helps ensure the finished product delivers the exact look a client is expecting. “Our technology allows us to achieve the correct depth of colour saturation and a true colour match,” Martin says. “Traditional paint suppliers often struggle with vibrant hues in certain shades, or they Page 6 St. Thomas Home Show Guide • April 2026

Together, those partnerships help ensure the finished product performs as well as it looks. “After more than 20 years in the industry, we’ve seen firsthand how premium materials and experienced installers consistently outperform cheaper options,” Martin says. “Exterior selections are an investment, but one that delivers a strong return over time.” As the business continues to grow, maintaining quality and con- sistency remains a priority. Anna notes that expanding the team thoughtfully has been key. “Our growth has allowed us to train and onboard staff carefully so we can maintain the high standards we expect,” she says. simply won’t guarantee the match. We’re able to confidently work with clients to achieve their desired result.” “Exterior finishes are often the first impression of a home or project,” Anna says. “They play a huge role in curb appeal and even resale value. When attention to detail is missing, it affects the overall aesthetic and sometimes even the structural integrity.” To ensure durability and long-term performance, SW Color Plus partners with trusted manufacturers and high- quality materials. One of their most prominent partnerships is with James Hardie, known for fibre cement products designed to withstand harsh conditions. “Fibre cement board is in- credibly durable,” Martin explains. “It stands up to weather, pests and vermin, it’s low maintenance, and it’s fire resistant. With a 30-year substrate warranty, it’s one of the most reliable exterior products available.”

Elgin Carpet One and the Wallpaper Loft: Expanding the Floor Plan and the Vision For more than half a century, Elgin Carpet One has quite literally helped lay the foundation for homes across St. Thomas and Elgin County. Now, with a major renovation and expansion underway, the long-standing local business is preparing for its next chapter of growth. Elgin Carpet One Floor & Home traces its roots back to the late 1960s, when Jan Versteeg launched what was then known as Elgin Floor Covering. He was later joined by his brothers George and Tom. The business was incorporated in 1976 and purchased its current location at 1026 Talbot Street, transforming a former car wash into a flooring showroom. Over the decades, the building has seen numerous upgrades, but nothing quite like the current expansion. “In the past 10 years, the business has experienced substantial growth in tandem with the city of St. Thomas,” said Denise Versteeg, Owner & Manager. “We really felt the physical constraint of the building, a warehouse crammed with goods, and having additional staff required more offices and space to work.”
Make a Statement Your walls set the tone for your entire home. At The Wallpaper Loft, we believe every room deserves a personality, whether that’s bold and dramatic, soft and serene, or timeless and refined. However you want your space to feel, we’ll help you bring it to life. Be Bold. Be Brilliant.
Subtle. Sophisticated. Serene.
To advertise here, please contact Geoff@VillagerPublications.com Customers can expect to see an even broader selection of flooring options, including the ever-popular luxury vinyl plank, which continues to drive growth. Supporting Canadian suppliers remains a priority as well, something many local homeowners value when making renovation decisions. The renovation includes the addition of 8,000 square feet of new warehouse space. That expansion will allow the company to keep more popular flooring products in stock, offering customers quicker turnaround times and competitive pricing. “This warehouse gives us a great opportunity to grow, diversify, and better serve our community,” says Michael Versteeg, Owner & Project Manager. “The ability to stock a variety of flooring and accessories will provide quick turnaround options for our customers, something we have not always been able to do in the past.” The added warehouse space also frees up the existing storage area for expanded offices, brand new bathrooms, a boardroom for meetings and staff training, and a larger showroom floor with even more product displays. Despite the growth, the team says what truly sets Elgin Carpet One apart is its personal approach. “We pride ourselves on providing relevant product knowledge and installation expertise,” Denise explained. “We believe in building relationships with our customers, and we are eager to find the right solution at the best price.” In the same location as Elgin Carpet One is the Wallpaper Loft, which specializes in Benjamin Moore Paint, wallpaper and window coverings. “Having all the different products offered at one location makes coordination much simpler,” Tom Versteeg, President and Co-owner of Elgin Floor Covering Ltd. and Manager of Wallpaper Loft, explained. “When people redecorate, they are often changing more than one part of their décor at a time. Having all the different products offered at one location makes coordination much simpler,” Tom said. “If they are changing the flooring, they will also repaint and maybe add some wallpaper. Their existing window coverings may no longer work with the new colours.” “This gives them much greater confidence in their design choices,” Tom added. “Our staff are great at asking the client about the project they are working on. Large projects can be especially overwhelming. Our team helps people take the stress out of that process by walking them through it from start to finish.” Tom also notes that wallpaper has seen a new resurgence. “Wallpaper has made a tremendous comeback; people are seeing how it can bring so much colour and life to an otherwise plain space.” He noted the return to unpasted and ‘paste-the- wall’ options, making installation easier and more appealing for today’s homeowners. The store also continues to carry premium Hunter Douglas window fashions, while adding Alta Window Fashions, a brand owned by Hunter Douglas, to provide a strong option for more price-conscious customers without sacrificing quality or warranty support. As the dust settles on the renovation, the Versteeg family is looking ahead with optimism. After more than 50 years in business, Elgin Carpet One isn’t just expanding its footprint; it’s reinforcing its commitment to being the local destination for floors and much more. The Wallpaper Loft Team: Stephanie Vukovic, Arlene Balsden, Stacey White, Lauren Hilderbrandt, Kristina Groeneweg and Tom Versteeg.

Is Your Air Conditioner Ready for Summer? It always seems to happen the same way. The first true heat wave of the season rolls in, you reach for the thermostat… and nothing happens. Or worse, the system sputters to life only to blow warm air. Before summer temperatures soar, it’s worth asking: is your air conditioner truly ready? There are several early warning signs that your system may need professional attention. If your air conditioner is blowing warm or inconsistent air, making unusual grinding or rattling noises, cycling on and off more frequently than normal, or producing weak airflow, these could all point to underlying issues. A sudden spike in your hydro bill without increased usage is another red flag that your system may be working harder than it should.

While it can be tempting to search for a quick online fix, air conditioning systems are far more complex than they appear. Modern units involve electrical components, refrigerant lines, sealed systems, and precise calibrations. Attempting DIY repairs can not only void warranties but may also create larger, more expensive problems — not to mention potential safety risks. A regular seasonal maintenance from a local heating and cooling company means working with technicians who understand our regional climate and the demands Ontario summers place on equipment. They can identify small issues before they turn into full system failures. In many cases, a simple repair, such as replacing a capacitor, cleaning coils, or correcting a refrigerant imbalance, can restore efficiency and extend your unit’s life. Regular maintenance is one of the smartest investments homeowners can make. Annual servicing typically includes inspecting electrical connections, checking refrigerant levels, cleaning components, testing system performance, and ensuring your thermostat is calibrated correctly. This preventive care helps improve energy efficiency, lower operating costs, reduce the likelihood of mid- season breakdowns, and add years to the life of your equipment. If your system is more than 12 to 15 years old, a trusted local tech- nician can also help you determine whether repair or replacement makes the most financial sense. Today’s high-efficiency models use significantly less energy and can provide better cooling and humidity control, leading to long-term savings and improved comfort. The bottom line? Don’t wait for the first 30-degree day to find out your air conditioner isn’t ready. Scheduling an A/C maintenance now could mean a cool, comfortable, and stress-free summer ahead.

Why Doing It Yourself Isn’t Working Most owners respond the only way they realistically can: they try to handle it themselves. Fix the website when there’s a spare hour. Post here and there. Check reviews at 10 o’clock at night after the actual work is done. The effort is genuine, nobody’s being lazy, but marketing that happens in the cracks of an already full day rarely adds up to much. Bigger companies have whole teams for this. Local businesses are expected to compete in the same digital space with none of that backup. It’s an unfair gap, and after a while, it’s exhausting. There’s a Better Way to Get Back to the Work You’re Good At My name is Jason Durham, and I started Sparkstartr to work with business owners across St. Thomas and Elgin County who are proud of what they’ve built but are done with being their own marketing department on top of everything else. It’s to make sure people can find you and feel confident when they do. That shouldn’t hinge on whether you managed to post something this week. If you’re reading this next to an ad on this page, scan the code. You’ll see exactly how businesses right here in St. Thomas are stepping out of the marketing role and getting back to the work they’re actually good at. Being great still matters. You just have to be findable.
stand behind your work. You treat people the way you’d want to be treated yourself. Word gets around fast here, always has, and a good reputation still carries real weight. For a long time, that was genuinely enough. The Rules Changed When No One Was Looking But something shifted, and it happened quietly enough that a lot of owners didn’t notice until they felt it. Even when someone hears your name from a neighbour or a friend they trust completely, their next move is almost automatic. They Google you. They pull up your website, your reviews, your Facebook page, whatever comes up first, before they ever pick up the phone. It’s not that they doubt you. It’s just how people make decisions now. And if what they find looks outdated or hard to navigate? They hesitate. Hesitation, more often than not, means they move on to whoever shows up next.
That’s where a lot of solid, well-run local businesses are losing ground right now. Not because the quality slipped. Not because people stopped needing what they offer. But because being visible started mattering as much as being good. You’re Not a Digital Marketing Agency. Stop Acting Like One.
You’re running ads, posting content, fixing your website, chasing Google rankings… and still wondering why growth feels random.
Every hour you spend on marketing is an hour you’re not running your business.
You don’t need more tactics. You need a team (and your evenings back).
Scan to stop doing five jobs and get back to the one that actually pays your bills.

Crafting Comfortable Living Spaces with MD Construction Home renovations can be both exciting and overwhelming for homeowners, but working with the right team can make the process far smoother. For Tom Baines, who, along with his wife Jocelyn McTaggart, is the owner of MD Construction, helping homeowners improve their living spaces is at the heart of what the company does. “MD Construction is a residential construction and renovation company focused on helping homeowners transform their living spaces,” said Tom. “The company works closely with clients from the planning stage through completion to ensure projects are well organized, practical, and built with quality craftsmanship.” The company specializes in residential construction and renovation projects designed to enhance both the functionality and appearance of a home. Their work ranges from small improvements to larger renovation projects, depending on the homeowner’s needs. “That includes kitchen renovations, bathroom remodels, basement finishing and remodelling, interior renovations, home additions, and general home improvements and repairs.” No matter the size of the project, careful planning and organization are essential to delivering a successful result. Tom says the company follows a clear process to guide homeowners through each stage of the renovation. “A typical project starts with an initial consultation to discuss the homeowner’s goals, ideas, and budget,” he said. “From there, we do a site visit to assess the space and project requirements, then prepare a detailed scope of work and estimate.” Once the plan is in place, the project moves through the design phase before construction begins. “The construction phase
includes regular progress updates, and we finish with a final walkthrough to ensure the work meets expectations,” Tom said. Communication plays a key role throughout every project. Renovations often involve multiple decisions along the way, and staying connected with clients helps ensure everything stays on track. “Keeping clients informed throughout the process helps ensure expectations are clear, decisions are made efficiently, and projects run smoothly. Open communication also helps build trust and confidence between the contractor and homeowner.” For homeowners considering a renovation project, Tom encourages taking time to plan before construction begins. “Plan ahead and take time to think through your project goals,” he said. “Work with experienced and reputable professionals, set a realistic budget and timeline, and be prepared for decisions along the way during construction.” Quality workmanship is another priority for the company. “Quality is maintained through careful planning, skilled workmanship, and attention to detail throughout the project,” Tom explained. “We work with experienced tradespeople and make sure each phase of the project is completed properly before moving to the next step. Each member of the team contributes to different aspects of the project, from planning and coordination to the hands-on work on site. A coordinated team helps keep projects organized and ensures the work progresses efficiently.” “One of the most rewarding aspects of the work is seeing a space transform from the beginning stages of construction to a finished project that improves a homeowner’s living space,” Tom says. “Helping clients bring their vision to life and delivering a finished result they are proud of is what motivates the team on every project.”

Building Dreams with DUO Building For more than 45 years, DUO Building has been helping homeowners and businesses transform ideas into beautifully finished spaces. Led by partners Keelan Malloy, John Relouw, and Mark Malouin, the company has earned a reputation for quality craftsmanship, strong communication, and a client- focused approach to construction and renovations. That commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. DUO Building has received several prestigious honours, including the London Home Builders Association Renovator of the Year and London Inc.’s Best of London awards. For John Relouw, the recognition reflects the dedication of the entire team. “Being recognized with awards like the London Home Builders Association Renovator of the Year and London Inc.’s Best of London is incredibly meaningful for our entire team,” says John. “Renovations are a collaborative effort, so those acknowledgements really reflect the dedication, craftsmanship, and professionalism of everyone involved, from our trades and suppliers to the people in the office and of course, the carpenters and staff that keep projects running smoothly.” For the company, the awards are especially meaningful because they come from within the local community. “Knowing that our work is being recognized by industry peers and by the homeowners we serve reinforces that we’re doing things the right way,” he adds. “We take a lot of pride in helping clients transform their homes, so having that work recognized is both humbling and motivating for our team to keep raising the bar.” DUO Building’s philosophy is captured in its slogan: Dream it. Design it. Build it, and that journey begins with collaboration.
Clients often arrive with inspiration, ideas, or challenges they hope to solve within their homes. The DUO design team works closely with them to understand how they use their space and what improvements will make the biggest difference in their daily lives. “From there, our design team begins translating those ideas into functional layouts, material selections, and detailed plans that bring clarity to the vision,” John says. “The design process allows us to explore options, refine the details, and ensure everything works both aesthetically and practically.” Once the plans are finalized, the construction team takes over and brings the design to life. “There’s something really rewarding about seeing a project move from a conversation and a sketch to a finished space that improves how someone lives in their home or business,” he adds. One of the things that sets DUO Building apart is its full-service approach. Rather than homeowners having to coordinate multiple contractors, designers, and timelines, DUO manages the entire renovation process from start to finish. Another unique aspect of the company’s approach is that each project has a dedicated carpenter on site. “That carpenter is consistently on site, understands the de- tails of the project, and acts as a direct point of contact for the homeowner,” he explains. “It helps ensure quality craftsmanship and clear communication throughout the build.” For John and the team at DUO Building, every renovation is personal. Whether it’s a kitchen where families gather, a relaxing primary suite, or a complete home transformation, their goal remains the same: turning a client’s vision into a space that truly improves how they live.

St. Thomas Homeshow Guide
Better Building Starts with Better Standards
At this year’s St. Thomas & Elgin Home Show, Halcyon Homes is showcasing family-focused homes in Talbotville and low- maintenance bungalow condos in Aylmer for buyers who want more than the standard builder experience. For many buyers in St. Thomas and Elgin County, the challenge is not simply finding a home. It is finding the right home in the right location, built by a company they can trust to do things properly. That is where Halcyon Homes believes it stands apart. At this year’s St. Thomas & Elgin Home Show, Halcyon Homes is highlighting two opportunities designed for two different, but equally important, local buyers: single-family homes in Talbotville for families and move-up buyers, and bungalow condominiums in Aylmer for downsizers, retirees, and anyone looking for simpler living without sacrificing quality. In a market where buyers have more questions than ever, confidence matters. People want to know what they are getting, who they are dealing with, and whether the builder behind the home will still stand behind it after closing. Halcyon’s approach is built around answering those questions the right way. In Talbotville, Halcyon is offering thoughtfully designed single- family homes for buyers who want more than a standard production experience. The location continues to attract attention because it offers the balance many families are looking for: close to St. Thomas, convenient to London, and well-suited for people who want space without feeling disconnected from work, schools, and everyday amenities.
For buyers in a different stage of life, Halcyon’s Aylmer con- dominium community offers a compelling alternative. These bungalow condos are designed for homeowners who want comfort, style, and easier day-to-day living. With approximately 1,100 square feet, two bedrooms, and two full bathrooms, they offer practical one-floor living without giving up the quality and design details that make a home feel complete. That makes them especially appealing to downsizers and retirees who are ready for less maintenance, but not less home. Open-concept layouts, carefully selected finishes, and thoughtful trim details create a space that feels refined, comfortable, and easy to enjoy. With exterior maintenance handled through the condominium structure, homeowners can focus more on how they want to live and less on the work that comes with maintaining a larger property. What continues to distinguish Halcyon Homes is a builder-first philosophy. The company’s leadership comes from hands-on construction backgrounds, and that perspective shapes everything from layout decisions to material choices to the overall customer experience. For Halcyon, quality is not just about appearance. It is about how a home feels, functions, and holds up over time. Visitors to the St. Thomas & Elgin Home Show are invited to stop by the Halcyon Homes booth to learn more about homes in Talbotville and bungalow condos in Aylmer, explore available opportunities, and ask about exclusive Home Show incentives. It is a chance to meet the team behind the homes, ask questions directly, and see what better building looks like when it starts with better standards.
Page 16 St. Thomas Home Show Guide • April 2026 For growing families, that matters. A home should support real life, not just look good in photos. It should handle busy mornings, full kitchens, guests, kids, changing routines, and the everyday wear that comes with a well-lived-in home. But location alone is not enough. The home itself has to work. That is why Halcyon focuses on functional layouts, bright living spaces, durable materials, and a more direct design- build process. Rather than passing buyers through layers of departments, the company emphasizes meaningful builder involvement from planning through construction. That helps ensure each home is not only attractive on move-in day, but designed to perform over the long term.
