and the lightnings His ministers.— Far rar. v. 12. My father, my father. This is the cry of orphanhood. In their brief intercourse Elijah had naturally taken the paternal place and Elisha had felt the comforting influence exercised upon him by the mighty prophet. We do not know the value of some ministries un til they are removed from us, but when the removal takes place and we look for the familiar face, the natural cry is, “ My father, my father,”— People’s Bible. v. 13. Bank of Jordan. The Jordan stands, in Christian experience, for the death of the self life. How difficult is the journey from Jericho (world) to Jordan. We may gladly give up the world and conquer at Jericho, but self dies hard. The believer who wants to go with God must go by way of the Jordan.—Neighbor. v. 14. Smote the waters. The mir aculous division of the waters was an evidence that the Lord God of Elijah was. with him and as this miracle was witnessed by the scholars from Jericho, they recognized the preeminence of Eli sha as now the prophet of Israel.— Faucett. v. 15. The Jeri cho theologians became hindrances to the ministry of Elisha. They so pro tested against his declaration and so in sistently demanded a critical investiga tion that Elisha grew ashamed of his testimony and yielded to their clamor. The Jericho theologians today, with the incessant din of “ Scholarship is agreed,” and assumption of superior knowledge, so repudiate the resurrection of Christ and other miraculous happenings that the young minister is astonished, stun
