HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

KEY SCHOOL DATES

After the success of last week’s Wear it Red day, Year 7 had a pink day to raise awareness of breast can- cer. It was lovely to see so many students dress for the day and we hope that this was a lovely way to mark their first half term at Waldegrave. We are so delighted to have them as part of our community

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

and so hope they have enjoyed their first few weeks in secondary school. Yesterday we welcomed the Globe Players into school to support our English Literature GCSE students. The workshops focused on An Inspec- tor Calls, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. The students really enjoyed the interactive performances that brought the characters to life and helped them better understand the texts they are studying. Last night we held our Sixth Form Open Evening to help Year 11 students get an insight into studying A levels here. It was wonderful to see so many of our current sixth form students volunteering. The Applications portal is now open and will close on 20 January at 9am. I am delighted to announce that a group of our Year 13 students won the Imperial College Science in Medicine School Teams Global Health Prize - their poster was called ‘Tb or not Tb’ which focused on identifying tuber- culosis in displaced people to prevent the spread across a refugee camp. The team was composed of Sabaa Q, Keira W, Anvi O’S, Gracie D, Lara R and Leila S. We couldn’t be more proud of them. Finally I would like to wish everyone a restful half term. Don’t forget our Wildlife Photography competition closes on Wed 6th Nov, so there’s still a chance to get your entries in.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Send us your achievement stories and photos to share by email to

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As we approach November and the mock exam season, it seems a good time to remind you of the excellent on-demand webinars available for parents and for young people from the Anna Freud Centre Schools Support Service, who we work closely with. We will be sharing this link to their student webinar on managing exam anxiety with Year 11 and 13 students, via their Google classrooms before half term. Parents can access their on demand webinar on supporting young people through exam time, which includes advice around: communicating with your young person at exam time, helping you to spot the signs of stress and offering you strategies to support your young person in managing exam stress in a healthy way. Other on demand webinars include: understanding the adolescent brain, building resilience, and weathering the storms of strong adolescent emotions. They can all be accessed via this document.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

During our final week of the half term, Year 9 students continued to keep the high expectations we set out at the start of the year. I am personally very proud of the students in our year who are consistently doing the right thing, going above and beyond in and out of lessons. Teachers often praise those students and take their time to let me know how well they are doing.

Fantastic news for the Year 8 and 9 Rugby Team in their match against St Richard Reynolds School. We have a victory of 85-15. The team really shone and we are so impressed by this result! Great work!

Our total Epraise for this half term is as follows: 1. 9EMU- 644 (2nd tutor group in the whole school)

2. 9SSR -618 (4th in the whole school) 3. 9PWA 617 (5th in the whole school)

Our students with the highest individual epraise points are: Ella R-J, Olivia M, Ivy M. Well done to everyone who has achieved epraise points this half term.l I also wanted to say a huge well done to the students who have maintained 100% attendance for this half term - keep it up! After half term, we will be focusing on ‘Kindness’. We will be encouraging students to share positive messages of kindness across the school and think about those in our community who consistently demonstrate kindness. I hope you and your child/ren have a fantastic break and we look forward to seeing them back, rested and ready for the next half term.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose. ~ Isla

Last Thursday, 17th, our Waldegrave Wanders took to the pitch for an exciting football match that showcased great skill and teamwork. Every player gave their all, working together with determination and intensity. Sakeena scored the decisive and win- ning goal, skillfully navigating past a sea of defenders. Stella, our other Player of the Match, demonstrated composure under pres- sure and expertly controlled the defensive play. Congratulations to the team on a well-deserved victory and for keeping our winning streak alive! Our netball teams had less success in their matches against Grey Court School this Tuesday, with both teams struggling to achieve a win. Our Rugby Teams also played on Tuesday, with both teams making impressive scores. The Year 8/9 Team broke through

the defensive line multiple times in their drive to score and ultimately achieve a 70 point lead in victory. This was all the more impressive as a number of the players were taking part in their first ever contact rugby match!

All players should be proud of the teamwork and resilience they have shown in their matches, well done!
