Beer Tasting with John’s Grocery Hills Bank in Mount Vernon (720 1st Ave) Thursday, June 14, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Doug Alberhasky, manager of John’s Grocery, will lead a sampling event with several different beer styles. John’s Grocery opened with Doug’s grandfather, John Alberhasky, and has been an Iowa City staple for over 60 years. After graduating from City High in ’87, Doug began working full-time at the store and started managing after his sophomore year at the University of Iowa. An avid beer enthusiast, Doug pairs his beer knowledge and John’s Grocery history for an entertaining and interactive presentation. Light refreshments will be provided to compliment the beer samples. Walking Tour of Marion Uptown Marion Heritage Center (590 10th St) Wednesday, June 20, 11:00-12:30 p.m.

Learn about Marion’s past as a thriving business center in Linn County. From industry growth brought by early railroad construction, to the current business and community expansion, Marion preserves and cherishes history through the many early buildings still standing today. The Marion Historical Society will lead a walking tour through Uptown Marion’s historic 6th Avenue, concluding with a picnic box lunch in the Depot at City Square Park.
