The town of Hawkesbury is seeking new tenants for the former Amoco Fabrics and Fibers plant on Cameron Street. However, in 2011, Bentley Leathers, which had at one time paid more than $1 million in rent, moved out when it opened its new distribution centre at Cameron Street and Spence Avenue. When BP Amoco gave the land to the town in 2001, it also provided funding to clean up contamination on the site. However, taxpayers have also helped the clean-up of solvents left over from the fac- tory that opened in 1969. In 2009, the federal government has provided $2 million towards the $2.2 mil- lion cost of removing materials that had been buried on the property. Deficit In 2011, the association recorded a deficit of $349,450 on expenditures of $1,310,000 and revenues of $960,630. The largest expenses were remedial work, $446,905, and environmental consultants, $234,565. Volunteer for tax service HAWKESBURY | As income tax season approaches, people are being urged to volunteer with Entraide Budgétaire Prescott-Russell, through the Clinique Juridique populaire de Prescott-Russell, to help low-income individuals who need assistance in filing their tax returns. “It is important for all Canadians to com- plete and file their tax returns with Canada Revenue Agency, and the service offered by Entraide Budgétaire is invaluable to local residents who otherwise cannot af- ford the assistance of an accountant,” says Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP Pierre Lemieux. Entraide Budgétaire saw more than 450 clients last year, but with grow- ing demands and less funding, there is a need for volunteers to continue offering this important free service in the 2013.
