BROCKVILLE | Ontario Education Min- ister Laurel Broten must ensure that the ongoing labour strife ends before it causes any further problems for the school system, contends Upper Canada District School Board chair Greg Piet- ersma. As of December 10, teachers in the re- gion were to begin taking action to pro- test salary freezes contained in conten- tious legislation. In a statement issued last week, Piet- ersma said, “There will be labour disrup- tions and our schools will suffer. There are all kinds of labour disruptions, not just strikes and I suspect we’ll see most if not all of them if the current situation is allowed to continue. It’s time for her to issue a new press release that tells us what action she is going to take to end the labour disruptions.” He recalled that September 11, Broten had issued a press release stating: “The passage of the Putting Students First Act protects the gains made in education while ensuring that the next two school years will be free from labour disruptions.” At the samemeeting of the board, trust- ees also received an update on the status of contract negotiations with teachers. BROCKVILLE | Veteran trustee Greg Piet- ersma has received a vote of confidence from his colleagues who have re-elected him for another term as chair of the Up- per Canada District School Board.
