Senior Companions Supporting the Individuality of Aging in Place

Aging is an individual journey, which can be richer with the moral support of a friend. Senior Companion volunteers are a select group of vetted and highly trained helpers 55+ who partner with isolated older adults to offer companionship, transportation, and respite to unpaid caregivers one-on-one, creating meaningful relationships that help older adults feel more satisfaction from their lives and a little less overwhelm from daily tasks. The Senior Companion Program honors the individuality of each person, by using a Service Plan, tailored by the client. This helps maximize their time with their Senior Companion volunteer and it helps the client age in place successfully, based on the client’s definition of success. Additionally, the Senior Companion Program works with other non-profits serving older adults, to create a more comprehensive and inclusive support system. These teams of professionals identify and match our most vulnerable community members to a Senior Companion volunteer.

Having a Senior Companion means being more “in the know” and having a compassionate liaison to our community’s vast resources. Aging in place is an individual journey, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely one! Our current stations include: • Jewish Family and Children Services • Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest • Pascua Yaqui Tribe • PCOA – Community Services System • Southern Arizona Veterans Health Care System • St. Luke’s Home • Tohono O’odham Nation
