Namon R. Flournoy 1936-2025 U.S. Army

T he Gary (IN) Alumni Chapter mourns the passing of Namon R. Flournoy (Gamma Omi- cron 1958) who entered on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Namon Ritchel Flournoy, was born on August 4, 1936, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Ritchel and Carrie Flournoy. He graduated

from Tolleston High School in 1955. He continued his education at Saint Augus- tine’s College in Raleigh, NC, joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in 1958, graduated in1960 with a BS in business, married Barbara Brown in 1961. They had one child, Ritchel Flournoy II. He served in

the US Army, worked at CPS, Sinclair Oil and in the Gary City Administration, retiring in the1990s. He was Trustee and Deacon at Van Buren M.B. Church. Preceded in death by parents, Ritchel & Carrie (Gordon) Flournoy; wife, Barbara (Brown) Flournoy; sisters, Olivia (Richard)

Lasenby and Shirley (OB) McCuiston. Brother Namon R. Flournoy leaves to carry on his legacy, son Ritchel Flournoy II, brother, Rochel (Arline) Flournoy; grand- daughter, Adrian Griffin, great grandchildren, Jasmin and Jaden Griffin; and a host of family and friends. ♦

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Selvin F. Gumbs, Jr. 1933-2024 Higher Education Executive, U.S. Army

S elvin Francis Gumbs, Jr. (Alpha Iota 1952) entered the Chapter Invisible on April 14, 2024 at age 90. Gumbs was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1933. He graduated from North- east High School in 1951 and subsequently earned a BS degree in business administration in 1955 from Morgan State College (now University). Gumbs subsequently earned an MBA degree in 1972 from

Syracuse University and advanced degrees from Harvard University’s Institute of Educational Management in 1987. Gumbs was a career U.S. Army Finance officer with 22 years of service retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His overseas assignments included Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, and Iran. Following his retirement, he worked in the banking

industry and later in higher education. He served as Chief Financial Officer for the Connecticut State Uni- versity System, in Hartford, CT and Director of Budget and Fiscal Planning for the Department of Higher Education in Trenton, NJ. A Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Gumbs affiliated with the Asbury Park-Neptune (NJ) Alumni Chapter. He also held lifetime membership in

the Northeast High School Alumni Association and the Morgan State University Alumni Association. Brother Selvin F. Gumbs Jr. is survived by his wife of 62 years Eva (née Finley) Gumbs, daughters Lauren Irene and Dara Elizabeth; and three granddaughters Eva, Lia and Sadie. ♦
