Col. (Ret.) James A. Manning 1932-2025 U.S. Army

T he Seattle (WA) Alumni Chapter mourns the passing of James A. Manning (Tau 1950), who entered the Chapter Invisible on March 7, 2025. James Alfred Man- ning was born January 26, 1932 to the late Henry T. and Effie R. Manning. He grew up in Orange, NJ, and grad- uated from Orange High School in 1949. He attended West Virginia State College (now University) (WSVC) in Institute, WV, where he was a premed major with minors in history and ROTC. He excelled in the Army ROTC program and was honored as a Distinguished Military Student and Graduate in May 1953. While in college, Manning joined the Frater- nity as a 1950 initiate of the West Virginia State College, the Tau of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. After graduating college and receiving an U.S. Army commission, Manning served on active duty at Fort Sill, OK, in Germany, and at Ft. Lewis, WA. He moved to Washington State

America (ROA) and the Military Officer Association of America (MOAA) and a member of the Mount Rainier Chapter of the latter organization. A Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Manning was a longtime member of the Seattle (WA) Alumni. He was also a Life Member of The West Virginia State University Alumni Associa- tion and The Union of Black Episcopalians. In retirement, Manning served as a substitute teacher in the Shoreline, Bellevue and Clover Park School Districts sharing his educational knowledge and life experiences with youth. He also was a financial supporter of The Boys & Girls Club of Lakewood and a contributor to The Lake- wood Historical Society. Brother James A. Man- ning was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne; first wife, Patricia; brothers, Henry Robinson and George Rus- sell; sister, Juanita Sydnor; stepson, Gideon Powell; and

and subsequently resigned his Regular Army commis- sion and reverted to the Army Reserves. He retired from the United States Army Reserves at The Pre- sidio of San Francisco as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics in 1985, following a military career spanning more than 32 years. Manning worked for The Boeing Company, the Seat- tle Public School District, IBM, the U.S. Department of Education Region X, and the Washington State Government as the Director of Veterans and Military Education in the Higher Education Coordinating Board, from which he retired in 1997 after twenty years of service to veterans and military personnel pursuing higher education

in Washington State. He served on the Boards of “Community Services for the Blind and Partially Sighted” (CSPBS) in Seattle for many years also the “Northwest Kidney Center” (NKC) of which he was also a successful Home Hemodi- alysis patient for more than ten years. He also served on the Board of Directors for “Communities in Schools-Lakewood” (CISL) while residing in Lakewood. Manning also served as the Chapter President and Historian of the Greater Puget Sound Chapter of the 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association for more than ten years and was a life member of the national organization. He was a Life Member of both the Reserve Officers of
