Exploring new cultures, creating new memories, and proving it’s never too late to see the world. At Cedarhurst of Dyer, a simple question sparked something extraordinary. Residents gathered around a large world map, pointing, wondering, remembering. What’s here? Where is that? Someone mentioned Italy. Another recalled France. Then came a moment that changed everything—one resident looked at the map and said, “Siberia is so huge. I know nothing about it.” That curiosity became the beginning of a journey—one that now takes residents around the world each month without ever leaving home. What started as a Geography Club and History Club has grown into something much more: a series of immersive, themed experiences that blend learning, laughter, and connection. “It’s not really about the countries,” said Life Enrichment Director Irina Rokhmistrova. “It’s about people and their feelings. It’s about creating moments that make life meaningful.” Each month begins with discovery. Residents explore a new destination—sometimes inspired by personal stories, sometimes by a book, a news headline, or a simple observation. Geography
Club builds anticipation, creating a space where curiosity leads and no one is afraid to say, “I didn’t know that.”
From there, the experience comes to life.
On Friday evenings, the community gathers for themed parties that transform familiar spaces into something entirely new. Decorations, music, and unique foods offer a sensory glimpse into another culture. “Each party is like a door in Alice in Wonderland,” Irina said. “You open it, and suddenly you’re somewhere new—with your friends around you.”
For residents, that sense of discovery is what keeps them coming back.
“I really am curious in learning about countries,” said Gerry Snodgrass, a former teacher. “I try to learn something new every day.” Others are drawn to the way the experiences are brought to life.
“What I enjoyed was how it was presented,” said Leo Paratore. “It was knowledgeable information about a country outside of the USA and where it is in the world.”
