The Next Generation of Care How two high school seniors used music, compassion, and personal connection to bring comfort and joy to residents living with dementia at Cedarhurst of Lebanon.
For their senior project, the pair explored the impact music can have on individuals living with dementia. With permission from families and Powers of Attorney, they selected residents in various stages of dementia and carefully observed how music influenced their emotions, behaviors, and memories before, during, and after listening sessions. Drawing from research and residents’ personal histories, BrookLynne and Jordan selected music from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s — songs like "Rockin’ Robin", "My Way", and "Burning Love". What they witnessed during those sessions left a lasting impression. “It was amazing to see their reactions and the ability to revisit and tell of their long memories,” they said.
BrookLynne Rose and Jordan Eastburn didn’t set out to simply complete a senior project. What began as a classroom assignment became something far more meaningful—an opportunity to bring comfort, connection, and joy to residents living with dementia at Cedarhurst of Lebanon. Both high school seniors found their inspiration through their work at Cedarhurst. BrookLynne first joined the community as a server before transitioning into nursing, while Jordan became a Resident Assistant to gain experience for her future healthcare career. Over time, both developed a deep appreciation for the residents they served, especially those living in Memory Care. “We both fell in love with learning more about the disease and how we can help others,” they shared.
