Conference and business event growth in northern Tasmania

Our role at Business Events Tasmania (BET) is to attract national and international business events to Tasmania. The business events sector contributes a direct economic annual return of over $120 million to the Tasmanian economy, bringing over 36,000 visitors to the state each year. Along with attracting the highest yielding spender in the visitor economy, business events provide intangible legacies including knowledge exchange, fostering innovation, business development and community development. Funded by the Tasmanian State Government and a membership base, BET is dedicated to marketing Tasmania nationally and internationally, bidding against a very competitive market of competing Australian and international destinations, to secure association and corporate business events to be hosted in Tasmania. As a state-wide organisation we promote all regions of Tasmania but recently completed research highlighted the lack of awareness of northern Tasmania amongst conference and business event organisers. With this knowledge, BET embarked on a campaign to educate the market on the two key messages of accessibility and capacity and as a result we have seen a great number of wins into the region. BET has recently secured 13 conferences to Launceston, with 11 of these conferences bringing 2,500 delegates to the north in 2019. An additional four conferences are currently pending with Launceston being considered in the top two destinations. Launceston also gained national attention recently by hosting the Australian Tourism Awards where Cataract Gorge was transformed into a unique event site for 800 tourism industry professionals – reinforcing the city’s capacity to host high-quality, ‘out of the box’ event experiences. To ensure ongoing success in building the northern region, BET has taken the initiative to introduce a quarterly forum with key northern stakeholders and will be progressing this in the near future.
