been within the metaphysics of race or the metaphysics of scientific classification. So, I actually
consider myself a specialist. And that’s a good thing in my opinion. Attempting to tackle too many
distinct philosophical issues is typically a recipe for doing low-quality scholarship on at least one
of those issues, at least in the present day. The days of Hume and Kant are over. My advice for
young philosophers is different depending on what your ultimate goal is. If you plan on becoming a
philosophy professor, get a solid foundation in the core areas of philosophy (e.g. logic, ethics,
metaphysics, & epistemology) and then become an expert on a few philosophical specialties and
topics in those specialt ies that you’re passionate about, like, say, ontic structural realism in
philosophy of physics. If you’re not aiming to become a philosophy professor, it’s fine to get really
educated in a specialty or topic in philosophy, but really, I’d recommend reading and studying
broadly to address as many curiosities as your heart desires. Thanks for the questions; they were
great.
