THE LEGAL LEDGER 800-800-4300 DENMONPEARLMAN.COM STEPPING INTO THE RING PRO WRESTLER TH3 GIVES IT HIS ALL OCT 2022

When I recently had the opportunity to meet Truman, I was struck by his hard work, drive, and determination. I couldn’t help but want to share his story with you all, so we’ve turned over our newsletter cover article to him this month. I hope his story inspires you as it inspired me. –Nicole Denmon I come from a long line of hard workers. I was born in Detroit,

experience was in muay thai boxing. I would train with my eldest sister Jasmine, who has always been one of my biggest supporters. I remember going on a training run, and I cut through the woods to finish faster. She scolded me, saying I shouldn’t take shortcuts in life. That lesson always stuck with me. So, when I decided to start wrestling, I knew I had to give it my all. Since my name is Truman Hudson III, I wrestle under my nickname TH3. I had many supporters like Jasmine, my mom, and a manager I worked for in high school. But others thought I was making a huge mistake.

Michigan, where my grandfather worked for Ford Motor Company for 30 years, and my grandmother spent over 40 years as a nurse. My parents didn’t come from the most privileged backgrounds, but by the time I came along, my dad was a professor at the University of Michigan, and my mom was working in the banking industry. They probably didn’t imagine I’d become a professional wrestler.

They said I was too small to wrestle or that wrestling is dumb and fake. I’ve worked hard to prove them wrong, and I’m proud to say I’m currently the youngest American wrestler to have competed in Dubai. Someday, I hope to make it big in Japan.

Detroit has a reputation as a rough-and-tumble city, and my family moved around a lot when I was growing up. I was often the new kid and never really found my place until high school. But I was always passionate about anime, superheroes, and anything else with an action-fantasy element. I especially loved wrestling. When I became interested in journalism during high school, I decided to do something with that passion. I started a wrestling podcast and found guests by messaging wrestlers I admired on social media. I got to interview a fair number of them, and they often told me, “You have a unique voice. I think you could be a wrestler.” I had a scholarship offer for a journalism degree at Columbia University, but I decided it wasn’t the right path for me. Moreover, I realized that wrestling was another way I could tell stories. I hooked up with one of my coaches, Matt Sydal, who brought me into the fold. I was valedictorian but skipped my 2020 graduation to move to Florida and begin training. Until then, most of my

When many people think of wrestling, they zero in on the hokey aspects of the sport. I won’t deny they exist — and they’re part of the fun for many fans — but I also like to remind people that this work is dangerous. I’ve had multiple concussions, and wrestlers are at risk of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) due to repeated traumatic brain injuries. People have been paralyzed or died in the ring. That’s why our training is so crucial. We’re taught not to hold back when we wrestle and hit each other hard. At the same time, we want to do everything the right way and prevent serious injuries to the best of our abilities. The work is hard, and I train about three days a week in addition to travel and a full-time job.

Wrestlers also need endurance. Matches often last 15–20 minutes, and Ironman matches last 90 minutes! You must be capable of

NEVER A DULL MOMENT

WHY WE SHOULD LIVE FOR TODAY

We can’t change the past, nor can we predict or guarantee the future. In the end, all we have is the present, yet most of us live our lives

But how do you even get started? The process requires a different way of thinking called mindfulness. Mindfulness is about focusing on what is happening in the present moment — not that work deadline, the movie you just watched, what’s for dinner, or the kids’ extracurricular schedule. It takes practice, and many people use meditation or breathing to help. When mindful, we concentrate on what others say and become more fully present. We also start to notice the small things we usually overlook: the cool breeze on our skin, the sound of the birds, the feel of a sweater, or the sight of our loved ones smiling. Our lives become fuller. And our stress decreases because we’re not clinging to things beyond our command. No one ever stops worrying entirely, and some planning is necessary to live a successful life. But too much can leave us with no energy or time to enjoy it. John Lennon once sang, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Start living in the present so you don’t blink and miss yours.

ignoring its many possibilities.

It’s easy to tune out the life around you, especially if you do many of the same things every day. Taking care of the kids, commuting, working, and running errands can blur together. Just as bad, when life isn’t going the way we want, it’s easy to fantasize about how things “should” be or how they once were. When we live busy or stressful lives, worrying or planning can also make us feel more in control. The problem with these strategies is that they don’t change anything. They help us discount the only thing we can control: what we do now. Life can pass you by that way if you’re not careful. The solution is to exist in the present moment as much as possible and enjoy the good things around us while we have them. Studies show that living this way makes people happier, healthier, and more likely to form strong relationships.

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S

Alzheimer’s disease affects approximately 5.8 million adults in the United States and is the sixth leading cause of death among adults. Unless there are advancements in prevention, that number is expected to rise to more than 14 million people by 2060. Americans spend billions every year treating the disease, and millions experience heartbreak as they slowly lose themselves or someone they love to dementia. These are just a few reasons Denmon Pearlman is proud to be sponsoring the 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Pasco County on Oct. 16. Registration is free for all walkers, but organizers ask every participant to donate toward the fundraiser. Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, which funds research into the disease and provides care and support to Alzheimer’s patients and their families. The Alzheimer’s Association was founded in 1980 by caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s. At the time, far less information was available on the disease, its progression, care, and diagnosis. The Alzheimer’s Association has helped change that over the past four decades. One of the organization’s core goals is to help provide care and support for people living with Alzheimer’s and their caretakers. They also promote awareness of the disease and advocate for more equitable screening practices. Just as importantly, the Alzheimer’s Association aims to accelerate research into prevention, early detection, and treatment. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place rain or shine, and children and leashed dogs are welcome. Those who can’t make it to the location can also participate virtually. Each walker will select a flower color for inclusion in the Promise Garden — blue for participants with Alzheimer’s or other dementia, purple for those who have lost someone to the disease, yellow for current caregivers, and orange for others who support the cause. The walk will open with a ceremony dedicating the Promise Garden. If you would like to participate in this year’s walk, register today at Act.Alz.org. Those who can’t walk can donate to the cause at the website. We hope you’ll join others across the nation for the world’s largest Alzheimer’s fundraising event and help create a future without this devastating disease.

A ROLLER COASTER RIDE OF TERROR

going at full force that entire time, jumping, running, and lifting other human beings. I’ve seen my fair share of wrestlers cry. But I always strive to have fun in the ring and lose myself in the athleticism and pageantry. Since I’m an independent wrestler, I do not have an exclusive contract, and I can travel and wrestle anywhere they’ll will have me. The pay isn’t always the best, but I’ve advanced beyond the literal hot dog and handshake compensation of my earliest days. Along the way, I keep making connections that allow me to break into new markets, learn new techniques, and hone my craft. I’ve spent a lot of time touring with the Heavenly Butterflies tag team across the South, and I can’t thank them enough for the skills they’ve taught me and the opportunities they’ve brought my way. One of the greatest gifts of my wrestling career is seeing my videos and performances motivate other people. High school classmates and even strangers have told me I’ve inspired them to get fit or follow their own dreams. I am a public figure in my own way, so I have to carry myself like one because others are watching. I take that responsibility seriously, but my ultimate goal is to give it my all and show fans a good time. If I’ve accomplished that, I’ve done my job well. — Truman Hudson III (TH3)

BUSCH GARDENS’ HOWL-O- SCREAM EXTRAVAGANZA

Kids get costumes, trick-or-treating, and school parties. But where can adults who want to indulge in some horrifying Halloween antics turn? Try Howl-O- Scream at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, the premier Tampa Bay Halloween celebration ranked by USA Today readers as one of the top 3 Halloween theme park events in the country. Howl-O-Scream began on Sept. 9 and will run on select dates through Oct. 31. It’s intended only for adults and starts at 7 p.m., with plenty of time for the youngsters to clear out of the park. Be warned there will be depictions of violence, blood, and gore, so steer clear if that’s not your cup of tea. But if over a dozen terrifying attractions sound like your idea of a fun night, buckle up for a wild ride. One of the top draws of Howl-O-Scream is the array of haunted houses on offer. There will be five dotting the park this year, each staffed by professional actors and telling a different scary story. Whether you’re the type to enjoy vampires, werewolves, witches, or ghosts, the park has you covered. Just be prepared for a few things to go bump in the night! Attendees will also experience several “scare zones” as they wander from one attraction to the next. Sections of the park will transform into open wonderlands of fright. You’ll explore corn mazes, dark forests, junkyards, cemeteries, and more. Creepy characters will likely surprise you inside the scare zones or other portions of the park. Be on alert! Once you’ve had enough of jumping out of your skin, you can take in one of the many shows on offer. You’ll find a rock band, dance party, or the Cirque X-Scream aerial show. A new interactive stage show will also premiere this year. Audience members will decide their fate in front of a sinister showman but soon find that he’s the one holding all the cards. After all of that, who needs the roller coasters? If you do, they and the other rides will be open all night! It may be impossible to see all of the sights in one evening. So, attendees can purchase passes for Howl-O-Scream’s entire run or tickets for just one night. Get yours at BuschGardens.com/tampa/events/ howl-o-scream and prepare for a fright!

Why You Should Make an Estate Plan Today

WHY EVERYONE NEEDS A WILL

Nobody likes thinking about their own mortality or the possibility of death, but the simple truth of the matter is that people pass away every day. That’s why it’s important to have an estate plan in place to ensure that your loved ones are taken care of. It doesn’t matter if you’re relatively healthy or have few physical assets — having a will is imperative, especially if you pass away unexpectedly. Here are two main reasons to make an estate plan today.

name someone as the executor of your estate and lay out how your assets will be divided. It will help save your family time, money, and stress while providing them with ample time to grieve.

Decides Who Will Take Care of Your Pets, Home, and Children

If you’re a parent, you can use your will to determine who will become the guardian of your children. Without a will, the court may appoint a guardian who you don’t want raising your kids. Additionally, pets are seen as property by the law, so you need to appoint someone to
