FEBRUARY 2026 7

A s announced in our December 2025 issue the NSRA will be bringing car shows to nine great locations throughout 2026. Several highlights on the 2026 schedule include the return of the storied Street Rod Nationals South for the 51st year. The Appalachian Fairgrounds in Johnson City, Tennessee, will be welcoming follow- ers of this historic NSRA event as it once again cap- tures the heart and soul of rodders in and around the South. It will join Quad Cities, the Northeast and the North as two-day shows featuring all the main activities found at three-day shows. With the Event Schedule locked and loaded, work has been underway filling each and every one of them with an impressive array of activities, giving vendors, par- ticipants and spectators much more than just thou- sands of cool street rods, customs, classics, trucks, performance machines and any 30-year-and-older expression of preserving and/or modifying vehicles we all love. The popular “Streets of Rods” at all eight 2026 NSRA Divisional events brings together rodders with builds fitting a wide variety of themes. Each year some of the Streets of Rods return while new ones are added or old themes are brought back. These gatherings are a great place to meet kindred spirits and ‘talk shop’ or maybe even take an award home. For 2026 the Streets will consist of: “Prime Time Place” sponsored by O’Brien Truckers of Charlton, Massachusetts. Don’t be afraid to attend just because you haven’t shelled out big bucks for a paint job because this Street is open to all vehicles with primer paint. If your project is on the other end of the paint spectrum, “Fantastic Flames & Super Scallops” sponsored by Watson’s StreetWorks from Nashua, New Hampshire, is the Street you’ll want to cruise and, as the name implies, it’s open to all vehicles with either Flamed or Scalloped paint jobs. FatMan Fabrications by Southern Rods & Parts, in Duncan, South Carolina, will return as the sponsor of an old favorite, “Fat Fender Freeway.” This Street will be filled with cool rods and customs from 1936–1948. Being open to all vehicles within these years wields the widest variety of pure street rods gathered in one place at the Divisional events. Also returning are several long-time favorites, including “29 Below” sponsored by Vintage Air, of San Antonio, Texas, open to all vehicles owned and registered to licensed drivers age 29 and younger. Although we feature participants from the 29 2026 Event Action

Below gatherings in every issue, this gathering of our future rodders attracts enough cool vehicles and even cooler stories that several times a year we run the special section you’ll find on page 66 of this issue. “Canadian Country” sponsored by the Rhode Island Street Rodding Association is open to all vehi- cles registered in Canada. Canadian Country only happens at the Northeast and North Street Rod Nationals. In 2026 Moser Engineering will sponsor the 22nd Annual “Builders’ Showcase” at the 57th NSRA Street Rod Nationals. It’s grown into one of the premier places to debut professional builds and getting selected for one of the limited spaces avail- able is becoming a privilege. Within the industry the “Elite Builder of the Year” has established itself as a major award, not only because of the cutting- edge cars that have won it, but also because the only judges are the other builders/shops on display and they choose the ultimate winner from this gathering of their peers. The Builders’ Showcase has received such popular feedback Classic Auto Mall continues to sponsor a Builders’ Showcase at the Street Rod Nationals East as well. Speaking of back on board in 2026 Vintage Air will continue their 90th Anniversary celebrations by presenting “Vintage 36” at the 57th Street Rod Nationals. The goal is to continue this celebration through model year 1940 as all our favorite street rods turn 90. Most NSRA awards are referred to as “Picks” chosen from participants’ vehicles and our favorites like “Pros’ Picks,” “Outstanding Use of Kolor” and “ISCA Picks” will all be back in 2026. There are no losers, but to be picked out of thou- sands of vehicles can be just as important to an individual as winning a judged competition. NSRA has always been known for bringing top- notch, family-friendly, hot-rod-centric entertainment to the delight of many cities, participants and spec- tators these past 56 years. NSRA gave birth to street rodding and has grown from pre-‘49 street rod events only to all the great 30-year-and-older builds we are enjoying today. Whether you enjoy hanging with friends and all the great cars, meeting parts manufacturers face-to-face, shopping at the swap meet and arts and crafts fairs, or enjoying music, bring your friends in 2026 and see what we’ve built for you. They’re Out There Dear Tom,

I want to congratulate you and your wife on the purchase of your ’54 MG TF I recently saw in StreetScene. It’s a beautiful car and prompted me to think you might enjoy seeing my ‘52 MG TD, since it’s all steel and no longer stock. I purchased it with a Chevy 4.3 V-6, four-barrel carburetor, TH350 trans and Ford 9-inch rearend. Oddly enough, it had drum brakes on the front and disc brakes on the rear. Since that time I have painted it, redone the interior including walnut edging, added a Speedway Motors wiring harness, and Wilwood disc brakes to the front, including a power brake unit, all in my home garage. The people who did the engine conversion before me did a masterful job. By removing the leg clamshell and cutting the floor out to move the seats back 6 inches, the car now has a flat firewall, and the engine sits well behind the front axle. The car has plenty of power and handles very well. Greg Ralston via e-mail Greg, Not realizing anything about the design change between ’52 TDs and ’53 TFs, I fell in love with everything from the cowl forward the first time I laid eyes on our TF. The laid-back grille, sweeping fenders with molded

Spreading the Word Hi Bob,

It was great meeting you at the Grand National Roadster Show last year. Representing NSRA as the Southwest Division Director, you were kind enough to give us two NSRA USA award plaques to present to two lucky kiwis at our New Zealand 50th NSRA Nationals. We decided to pick a street machine and a hot rod, and the recipients were totally blown away. If you could e-mail us a copy of your cool StreetScene mag when the cars go in, then we can publish the page in our own “Street Torque” magazine. Gary’s very traditional ‘28 roadster runs a 368ci Mercury, four-speed manual and ‘57 Ford rear axle to pick up the hot rod award and Trish’s super-detailed ‘68 Charger with a 425 Hemi picked up the street machine plaque. NSRA New Zealand is a relatively small, very close-knit family. At our local Christmas barbeque recently we had around 30 NSRA family members on a hot and sunny day. Bryan & Wendy Kilsby NSRA New Zeland Bryan & Wendy, Bob Ostrom, our NSRA Southwest Division Director, forwarded your correspondence to our editorial office. We’ve saved your e-mail address, but also wanted to let your NSRA family know that StreetScene magazine is also available at nsra-usa.com. From your kindred spirits in the States. — ED

Made ‘em All

O n page 66 of this issue we kick-off our expanded 29 Below coverage with Alex Kline from Plainwell, Michigan, and his ’37 Ford for good reason. Alex drove the ’37 to all nine NSRA events and entered the 29 Below gathering at each event in 2025. But there’s much more to the story, starting with Alex “aging out” of 29 Below in 2025, so he set his goals high to include his dad, Bill Kline, and his ’31 Ford extended-cab pickup. Bill owns Lightning Recovery & Towing in Plainwell, but managed to find the time to join his son on the epic journey. Even Bill’s ’31 holds a twist to this story in that it’s actually a ’31 Model A coupe body cut off behind the rear quarter windows and fit with a hand-formed rear panel. An ’88 Vette IRS and TCI IFS combined with an LT1 and 4L65e are mounted to a lengthened frame to fit the stock-length bed. Tulip

wood highlights, heat and cool seats, and an eight- speaker sound system had Bill cruisin’ in style. Bill’s wife Susan joined father and son for half their nine- event journey. Dedication can be measured by action and our last twist in this story is that both Alex and Bill are NSRA Safety Team members and in addi- tion to all the miles traveled, they helped perform Safety Inspections at each event as well.

100th Anniversary of the Mother Road

T he Hemmings “Great Race” presented by Coker Tire is a nine-day classic car rally that spans more than 2,300 miles and features 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles. The event uses a new route each year and features 17 hosted city stops along the way. For 2026, the Great Race is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road with a Route 66-themed event that starts in Springfield, Illinois, on Saturday, June 20, and ends in Pasadena, California, on Sunday, June 28, 2026. The Great Race was started in 1983 by Tom McRae and it’s now the world’s premier old car rally. This traveling time/speed/distance rally isn’t just a casual back road cruise, as it has a strict set of rules to keep competition tight. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check- points along the route and are penalized for arriving at the check- points early or late. As in golf, the

lier are eligible to compete, and the scoring system features an age factor to keep the earlier cars competitive. In the 2025 Great Race, a ‘33 Ford pickup won the event. A 1913 Chevrolet, a 1916 Hudson and a 1918 American LaFrance are the oldest cars scheduled to be in the 2026 Great Race that will begin in front of the old state capitol in Springfield and nine days later the race will finish at City Hall in downtown Pasadena. In between the start and finish cities are approximately 2,300 miles of competition and 17 hosted city stops in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California, with many iconic Route 66 sights along the way. The event’s main sponsors are Hemmings, Coker Tire, McCollister’s Auto Transport, Stahls and Samuel Smith Old Brewery. 2026NSRA Fellow Pages Sign-Up Time Is Now... Do It Here!

I t’s that time of year... time for you to put your name and phone number in the “ Fellow Pages ” so that should a fellow enthusiast be in your neighborhood and need assistance, he or she will have someone to call they know will come to their aid. That’s the way the NSRA Fellow Pages work, and that’s why it works so well... it’s a specialty vehicle enthu- siast helping another enthusiast, and that’s a proven, unbeatable formula. As great as the Fellow Pages concept is, however, it only works because so many of you, the caring NSRA mem- bers, make it work. If it wasn’t for all of you that offer to have your names and phone numbers listed in the handy, on-line Fellow Pages , this wouldn’t be the outstanding program it has become. So, as we do each year, we are reminding everyone once again that it’s time to send in the information needed to make 2026 another year when spe- cialty vehicle owners everywhere are assured that help is as close as the nearest telephone. For all of you that have been aided through the generosity of your fellow enthusi- asts, it’s pay back time. One of the best ways to express your appreciation for help received is to offer the same to another... to be there for the next person that needs the helping hand of a fellow enthusiast. NSRA compiles all new data for a completely new Fellow Pages each year, and it is always accessi- ble free to all of the members at nsra-usa.com. Every edition is totally new, and we do not pick up any names and phone numbers from the previous year. In this way, only those who care to participate do, and Fellow Pages users are assured they are calling on someone that is willing to help and phone numbers are as current as possible. Even if you have been a regular in the Fellow

Pages in the past, to be included in the new 2026 edition you must fill out the coupon and send it to NSRA Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, by the February 27th deadline. Organizations wishing to have their

members’ names listed as a group under the name of the club or association will find a convenient form for that use on the opposite page. When using this “group” listing, make sure the names are in alphabetical order and grouped by city to assist in preparing the information, and make sure everything required (NSRA membership number, name, city and phone number including Area Code) is included and legible. The on-line Fellow Pages itself will only list the names and phone numbers of those requesting to be included, but we need the complete address of the person submit- ting the name(s) for our records, and to assist us in case there is a question. Please be sure to include this informa- tion in the provided spaces as it is important and most helpful. Right now is the time to request that your name and phone number be included in the all-new 2026 NSRA Fellow Pages . By just offering to be included, even should you never be called on, you will be doing your part to again make this one of the greatest parts of being a spe- cialty motor vehicle enthusiast. Remember...we offer the Fellow Pages to the members FREE, but you and other caring enthusiasts like you make it work. NSRA’s part does-

n’t mean a thing without you doing your part. Don't put it off... SIGN UP TODAY!

NSRA knows the information in the Fellow Pages is priceless... that's why our members always get it FREE!

NSRA Autocross 2025 Going Faster Isn’t All About the Vehicle

By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director autocross@nsra-usa.com

A s the outdoor car show season gets closer, I’m hoping more NSRA members will give NSRA Autocross a try in 2026. Maybe you’ve heard my comment, “NSRA Autocross gives you the opportunity to safely learn your vehicle and trust it on the street.” This month lets go over what it takes to go fast on the track. Next month we will discuss track prep more in-depth. Every racing experience will be differ- ent, just like every track poses its peculiarities and challenges for professional racers. Unlike what you would think, getting around an autocross course isn’t a matter of raw power. You can ask any Miata owner and they will tell you, “It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.” The science of racing has always been the same, learning “the line,” a term you may have heard before that means ana- lyzing the course layout and mentally making it shorter. This driving technique can make the differ- ence between a great day or a frustrating one. Learning the course and knowing which twists and turns are coming up will be one of your best tools followed by testing your fastest way around each of those corners without excessive power where you’ll be correcting your position on the track at every cor- ner and wasting precious time. A few tips were shared by our autocross track coordinator, Ron Schoch of AutoXperts, and his first tip was to always walk the course for a few minutes. First thing in the morning is the perfect time to study the major corners and learn how many higher-speed sweeping curves you’ll encounter, in other words, how the track is laid out. This lets you figure out braking, turning and acceleration areas. He also reminded us that the tire can only do 100-percent of what it’s designed to do and, if you are turning and braking at the same time your tire can’t do both at 100-percent efficiency. It helps to watch more experienced drivers and take notice of when their brake lights come on and off. You can

also practice braking in a straight line at the same time you are going into a turn. Out on the course everything happens so fast it takes 100-percent con- centration so learn to look ahead, not where you are but where you are going. As you are exiting the turn your setup for the next one should be thought out. By trying different apexes, you might find going into a corner differently might give you a better exit, and an easier entry to the next corner. Ron says one thing most first-timers don’t realize is how important your seating position becomes. Your arms should be slightly bent, and the belts tightened enough to hold you solidly in the seat so your body can’t move around. In this solid, but comfortable position both feet should have solid contact with the pedals throughout their full travel. Smooth is fast (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told this). The smoother your acceleration and braking are, the better the car’s suspension can work for you. Actions that are abrupt quickly shift weight and upset the vehicle causing traction issues and it looks like you’re manhandling your way around the course. Minimize coasting, you should either be accelerating, braking, or steering with the throttle around a longer turn. Coasting wastes time. Ron’s final tip is that it’s not if, but when you will hit a cone, even the pros do it. The only thing hurt might be your ego but remember, you are trying to improve your time, not beat the other person’s time. Take a break if you find your time getting worse at each run to let yourself and vehicle cool down. It’s surprising how much better your runs will be after a short break watching other drivers and their “line” through the course can help you plan your attack. Lastly, ask for instruction. This can be done sever- al ways, by either riding along with someone that has more experience or have them ride with you. First-time drivers really benefit from this. Questions, comments or suggestions for an arti- cle, e-mail autocross/nsra-usa.com.

M ix and match parts for your LS engine to maximize power on a budget! With its debut in 1997, the General Motors LS-series engine arguably became the most popular V-8 engine in the world. It was first offered in Corvettes and then migrated to the entire General Motors lineup (where V-8s were offered), and millions have been manufac- tured. These engines are compact, powerful, and abundantly avail- able through salvage yards and crate-engine programs. Due to being manufactured

If you would like to extract more horsepower using all fac- tory parts, if you want to plan for a swap, or if you simply want to know more about the entire LS engine family, this book is a vital resource. The 8 1/2 x 11-inch, 144-page soft- bound book features 313 color photos and charts.

for more than 20 years, many versions of the LS-engine plat- form exist, including more than 30 variants. Many parts are inter- changeable, but some are not. In “LS Engine Parts Interchange 1997–2020,” veter- an LS-engine authors Joseph Potak and Jefferson Bryant pres- ent a wealth of knowledge regarding which parts work well together and which parts do not. Parts that are covered include engine blocks, rotating assemblies, cylinder heads, camshafts and the valvetrain, oil- ing systems, intake manifolds, electronic engine controls, and more. FEBRUARY 2026 29

O ld customs don’t die, they just get reborn. The truth is there has never been a better time to buy an already built pre-war car (WWII). It’s always been true that an already com- pleted car is cheaper, but with the number of pre- war loving rodders going down, there are now stunningly great deals out there (like the restored Model As that drove the Traditional/Rat Rod move- ment, which you can still buy). Dr. Todd Moran started with Joe Moreno’s last daily driver, a beauti- ful ’41 Ford two-door with a non-removable Carson top. I had seen Joe’s car many times and it was slick, but I didn’t recognize its new look until Dr. Todd mentioned it. He didn’t do too much to

make the ‘41 his—a little fancy paint on top of the already gorgeous paint, a new set of wheels and tires, some mechanicals that needed to be done, and an update on the interior. The car Dr. Todd bought was originally designed by Mr. Moreno and Bill Reasoner to be a super bitchin’ modern custom with a ‘60s vibe that Joe could drive right through retirement (Joe had the car for years in different disguises). The basic ’41 sits on a G-body chassis modified to fit the ’40 body, C’d, notched, and Z’d to sit right. The stan- dard G-body frame features stamped unequal length A-Arms, coil springs, a Saginaw steering box and disc brakes. The G-body runs an 8.5 GM

rearend on coils and controlled with a factory four-bar. Dr. Todd replaced the tired small-block with a fresh 350/350 and ditched the engine cov- ers (it had a full engine cover from Joe). The small- block is dressed as a Lincoln Y-block with custom valve covers, dual-Quads (500cfm Edelbrock AVS 2), an Edelbrock intake manifold, a Pertronix igni- tion system, and a Hooker exhaust leading to Dr. Todd added lakes pipes. His last change to the chassis was a set of chrome Artillery wheels wear- ing Diamondback wide-white radials. I love a wild custom that works, and everyone

can thank Bill Reasoner for this one (and Joe). The highly customized ’41 features quad headlights from a ’62 Chrysler with LED rings, resized ’46 Ford bumpers that are tucked tight, a sweet nosing, a smooth decking, shaved door handles, a smoothed- out gas filler, a 5-inch chop with a Carson top, ’48 Ford taillights, and its signature fade-away fenders. The custom came with the gorgeous Mint Candy Green paint straight from Joe. Dr. Todd had Cliff Anderson clean up the 10-year-old paint before Chris laid down the beautiful blue flames and the cool stripes. The interior is filled with Classic Instruments, a GM tilt column topped with a ’60 Caddy steering wheel, an 8-track, a GPX TV, a full-

length custom center console, bucket seats, and a modern touch screen radio with a backup camera. Everything else was then covered in roll and pleat white leather with green square-weave carpeting. There are a lot of things I love about Dr. Todd’s ’41 Ford, but most of all I love the sweet blending of old and new. The old-school TV and 8-track are custom touches from back in the day, but it still has modern tunes to enjoy. I love that the ‘41 has been built and changed many times over the years, slowly gong from mild-to-wild and now even wilder. I can’t wait to see what the next 20 years hold, but I’m sure we’ll see Dr. Todd enjoy- ing it as he cruises through the years.
