Working Group Contributions Variable Energy Resources
• Develop training as needed to share VER integration planning, implementation and operational experiences
Continued increases in variable energy resource (VER) activity, coupled with rapidly changing inverter-based technologies and integration challenges highlighted the need to explore reliability considerations related to VER integration in the SERC Region. As such, the SERC Engineering Committee formed the VER Task Force (VERTF) in 2016 to identify and assess these considerations. Upon recommendation from the VERTF, the VER Working Group (VERWG) was formed in 2017 and has continued to discuss and provide additional guidance related to these reliability considerations. Scope of Activities The VERWG scope of activities includes: • Trend and analyze data on relevant VER activity for the Region or as requested by NERC • Evaluate, analyze, and communicate planning, implementation, and operational VER topics • Monitor ongoing industry activities and incorporate, as appropriate, recommendations from industry groups into the VERWG work plan • Monitor other Regions with high VER penetrations for lessons learned
Work accomplishments In 2020, the VERWG is focused on the following activities:
• Developing a paper to document industry guidance and SERC member practices regarding interconnection requirements for inverter-based resources. The Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) document incorporates best practices for inverter-based resource interconnections to the Bulk Electric System and summarizes each SERC entity’s policy for interconnection. VERWG Assessment The SERC Region is moving in a direction that allows all SERC entities to have increased certainty and understanding on the effects of VERs on the Bulk Electric System as usage increases. SERC and its members are focused on identifying risk caused by variable generation and are collaborating to continue to develop mitigation strategies for these risks.
