Reflection on 25 years The history actually starts well before 25 years ago, my father, Leo, owned Registered Angus cattle in the 50’s. He was raising and selling bulls in Clinton County IA. Getting married, a move to Jackson County and a switch to purebred hogs interrupted his Angus involvement. Due to the pork industry decline in profitability in the late 80’s, the Angus cattle returned in the early 90’s. I started working with Dad after graduation from Iowa State in the mid 90’s and officially purchased the cow herd in full in 2001 marking the 25 year celebration. Some would say after 25 plus years that you’re building your legacy, while others would say it means you’ve been stubborn and paid your share of dues. In reality, it’s some of both. My story like dad’s faced interruption as well. Leo sold the farm real estate in 2008 so I leased the cows to short term partners while we (Laurie and I were still dating long distance to Washington D.C.) figured out where we would call home and build our future. Turns out it was Bellevue all along. Unfortunately, Laurie’s father Phil was diagnosed with Cancer and we returned to Bellevue to help her family thru a rough time and transition. We started renting her home farm and brought back the cattle that were on lease. We purchase a portion of the home farm in 2013, built a house and the cattle building that now hosts our annual sale. We have since, purchased her Grandparents farm in 2020 and the remainder of her parents farm in 2022. On the cattle side, when I was first working with dad, we purchased and interest in SS Traveler T510. An influential sire over the next decade plus. In 2018, we partnered with Genex to purchase SS Odessey H71. While he was fantastic at natural service, semen quality after freezing was just below the threshold for commercial marketing. Most recently, in 2024, we partnered with 6 other forward thinking purebred breeders to purchase Henke High Ground. A balanced EPD bull, who combines actual production, impeccable foot quality, and a powerful cow family. First calves are impressive, light birth, early growth and plenty of eye appealing shape! We look forward to offering those bulls in 2027. While there’s much more detail and stories to tell, you’ll have to wait for the full book…
