A special learning experience

ALEXANDRIA | Glengarry District High School student Sydney Collard has en- joyed a unique learning experience as a student trustee on the Upper Canada District School Board. Collard, who will be succeeded by Roth- well-Osnabruck grade 11 student Tyler Harbers, says her role has helped her see what she is capable of. “I’ve learned a lot working with oth- ers, but also with myself,” she says. “Even though I am in a leadership role, we’re all one and we’re all equal. The student sena- tors and board members have been very supportive of me. I’m really excited about next year because I know Tyler is so eager to learn and grow,” says Collard, who is heading off to the University of Calgary to study international relations. Harbers, who begins his term in August, says he became interested in the role after speaking to the current student trustee, Sydney Collard, who attends Glengarry District High School. “I spoke to her at a Link Crew event, and it got me interested,” he says. Harbers is a member of the UCDSB’s Student Senate, a leadership group for elected senior students throughout the board. He said he loves being a part of the Senate, and looks forward to coming back and leading the group next year. “I’m excited to work with the school board too,” he says, adding that he at- tended a recent board meeting to meet the board members and senior team. “It was an eye-opener,” he says. “But, it was less intimidating than I thought it would be. It was interesting to see how everything works.” Harbers praises Collard for her work as the student trustee this year. “I think she has done a great job,” he says. “I hope to continue with the great work that she’s doing. I want to share stu- dents’opinions and ideas with the board. I want to help get the student voice heard.” The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is looking at three possible infrastructure projects in Prescott-Russell. Improvements are being considered for the Stardale Road underpass on Highway 417, a Highway 34 culvert near Hawkes- bury and the Limoges Road underpass on the 417 between Russell Township and The Nation municipality. Dillon Consulting has been contracted to finish the design and environmental assessments on the three infrastructure projects. The three are among two dozen such projects in eastern Ontario that the minis- try is looking into. Road work ahead
