Two UJ women’s football maestros called for national Under-17 camp
representative for higher education and national women sport.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) invited two University of Johannesburg (UJ) women in football, Nthabeleng Modiko and Motshegwe Gositang, to join the national Under-17 camp for the World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia on 15 April 2022. Modiko served as Assistant Coach while Gositang joined the playing squad. The pair reported for camp on Friday, 8 April 2022, at Fun-Valley until 16 April 2022. Coach Modiko recently joined UJ Football in January 2022 from Wits Football Club where she managed the Wits women’s team. She is no stranger to representing the country. She played for and captained the national team, Banyana Banyana.
For Gositang, this is her maiden national team call up. She is a UJ Football Club member who is currently in Grade 10 at Curro Aurora High School. “The call up to represent my country means my talent and continuous hard work are recognised. To be entrusted with a national duty is one of the greatest tasks one can receive. This has always been my dream and I am glad to finally live it,” she says. The youngster joined the UJ Football Club in 2018 when she turned 12. She made her senior team debut on 08 May 2021 in a match against Richmond United in the Hollywoodbets Super League. “My experience at UJ has been a fulfilling journey. It has added value to my growth as a footballer. The club provides a nurturing environment, and the support has been amazing. Navigating my weekly training schedule means that I have to find balance in training and school,” explains Gositang.
Previously, she guided the Under-17 team as Assistant Coach twice. “It is always an honour and a privilege to represent my
country, as a player in the past and a coach now. I think I can sum it up by saying I’m very proud,” says Coach Modiko. Modiko is a UJ alumnus who also played for UJ in 2008. She
